Must admit I've never seen a laptop that needs a battery to power up. I don't deny they probably exist but I've never seen one that behaves like that.

The VGP-BPS26 is on Sony's recall list for overheating issues so check this out first and you may get effectively a free battery:

Most laptops will not power up without a battery.

There are no "reputable suppliers" of laptop batteries, buy from the manufacturer or buy Chinese made fakes, those are your choices.

If someone is retailing non-OEM batteries, then they are fakes and your simply paying 2 or 3 times the price for the same fake you'd buy from China on eBay..

The same very much applies to phones, tablets and even power tools, if it's not genuine it's fake.

Erm....not quite. An original battery might have Samsung cells inside. A replacement battery might have Samsung cells inside. Don't oversimplify when trying to make your argument against purchasing branded goods.
The difference can be the controller and the outer casing. Sony use a combination of their controller and firmware on the laptop to discourage use of any battery but their own.

So yes, there are differing qualities of replacement battery. One might use generic cells, another might use genuine branded cells...

OR (very likely) the power jack socket has become damaged, something which accounts for upwards of 90% of laptop charging issues
    .

Can you back up this stat or did you just make it up on the spot?!
laptop will work with power plugged in
There you go, it's not the socket - one of the rare 10% of cases according to Strider!

OP - 5 years of use, or non-use, is plenty for a battery these days. It's probably just old and needs replaced. I note Neil Jones' post above - that's worth looking into.
If not, get onto Amazon and look for a compatible battery with decent ratings. You will pay silly prices for a genuine Sony battery new, or you could buy a second hand one off eBay, and risk a fake. I wouldn't worry about damaging the laptop, just find a half decent battery and budget for another one in 5 years!

I was given an old Dell Latitude D600 laptop as I needed something with Windows XP for a specific purpose.

The battery wouldn't charge either but it worked plugged in.

I read on the internet to put the battery in a sealed polythene bag in the freezer for 24 hrs.

I did and it has charged up OK since then.

Personally I think anything that boils down to "put something electronic in the freezer" is either wishful thinking, a recipe for disaster or part of the last-chance saloon.

You'll need a new battery unfortunately. There's quite a few manufacturers that put a chip in their batteries to ensure their early demise. I'd recommend going for a Chinese copy.

    SONY VAIO

So is yours subject to recall?

My laptop is eight years old and did the same thing. Rather than trying to fix it, I bought a second hand original battery for a fiver. Job done.

So if all else fails and you want an original, you can do the same: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Genuine-Sony-Battery-for-VPCEH16EC-VPCEL15EC-VGP-BPL26-VGP-BPS26-VGP-BPS26A-A62-/252402104468

This is claimed to be new and original: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Genuine-Original-Sony-VGP-BPS26-VGP-BPS26A-VPC-CA-VAIO-VPC-EH-Laptop-Battery-/401343540179

Sadly no it is not one on the recall list.
I do it just for fun and whatever I win is a bonus

Again, if you're going to make a claim like this, could you please back it up? Have you seen and analysed one of these chips to work out their purpose?
