Ferry Cancelled

My parents are coming back off holiday and the ferry has been cancelled due to technical problems.

They were due to come back from France to England today and had booked a hotel by the dock as they live 6 hours away from the ferry dock. Now they are coming back on an overnight ferrry but cant book a room on the ferry as its full and will have to drive back as soon as they dock at 7am in the morning as they have work the following day.

I just wondered what their options are about getting refunds/compensation. Similar thing happeennd to my mate when his flight was delayed and he got his full holiday money back somehow.

Thanks for advice

Worth an ask with the Which guidance above as a minimum, but how sucessful you are may depend on the Ferry Company's attitude and how persistent your parents are.

Case study; last year, our Brittany Ferry was cancelled less than 24 hours before we sailed to Northern Spain from the UK due to a major technical fault.

They rang us that morning and offered a flexible series of options; from cancellation and deferral, to driving an extra 500+ miles through France.

We took the latter deal; sailed that evening to northern France, with a generous incentive of a cabin upgrade, the extra hotel night free, about £260 which more than covered fuel and tolls, and reasonable cash claimable for food and drink...

Not exactly "compensation" but we felt well-served and had the enjoyable expereince of discovering of La Rochelle as an overnight stop! In effect it meant we paid them only about £750 for 2 overnight ferry crossings with comfy cabins and 13 nights' B&B in classy hotels.

Guess who we'll be travelling with on our twice yearly motoring jaunts! Dunno if P&O or others would be so efficient
