you really arent the smartest man alive. serioulsy add up the number of people agreeing with you, and the number of people telling you to pipe down. Quite simple maths actually (use your fingers to count if it helps), and it may suprise you to know the result .

There is a big difference between an opinion being popular and correct

The OP was wrong with his claim this was insider fraud, Id say that is 99.9999% correct as it involves known fraud patterns, the information which was incorrect would be easily available to that person if insider, the fraud chosen isnt consistent with insider fraud and finally the "insider" would have to be working for every bank

This is not insider fraud, it is a misuse of compromised card details, in these cases the bank will deal with it and they would not want the cardholder to start playing amatuer detective unless asked as it could lead to chargebacks etc being challenged and make things difficult

The OP should wait for the paperwork, sign it and thats it, nothing else should be done unless he is specifically told too by the bank

The reason the fraudster gave the correct telephone number comes down to what is called data matching. Whoever runs Curry's finance side will use fraud detection software, this will involve checking if the number is indeed linked to the individual concerned or even if it is for the correct town, if not it will ring alarm bells, this can be done by a number of methods such as Experian Detect and National Hunter Databases (both Equifax and Callcredit have similar systems, and the organisationd does internal matching with the companies in its own group, in this case DSG) that hold details of previous credit application and the details given on them such as employer, phone numbers, date of birth, salary etc, and also matching it with a national database of names and phone numbers provided by the major market players. If a match fails i.e. in the application it states the area code is in a different town or they have been employed for 10 years with company x but in every other application they have been employed since 2003 with company y, then this will raise an investigation. "Iamthesmartestmanalive" it is a rather grand title and from what you have written you clearly have no idea of how an organisation goes about trying to verify using electronic means if the data it has received is genuine or likely to be fraud. I suggest you get a job in the industry, work their for 10 years, and then you can make comment, which hopefully will be based on the sound knowledge that underpin the system and not fatuous remarks to someone who is obviously concerned about what has and could occur in future as another person is intent on using their personal details to rip people off. Thanks james :T

Nail on the head springs to mind.
And to all the others thanks for the defense.

And as for you "Iamthesmartestmanalive" your obviously far superior being than me (which is why i must be in this position) and i hope people that have problems arn`t put off posting there problems by some of your comments made.
The "amateur detective" quote actually made me smile simply because me and i guess quite a few others would actually like to try and find out how the hell it may have happened in the first place.
I do post on other sorts of forums and i do know there`s always a few but they do get found out rather quickly.:p

ahem IATSMA, being smart clearly doesn't involve being able to spell. It's 'amateur' .
  • Stop being mean to the poor guy. He had the hassle of having to cancel cards etc. He is obviously worrying about what happened. And he is trying to warn other people to be vigilant.

    Give him a break.

He should leave it to the people who are dealing with it instead of playing amatuer detective and making potentially libelous statements with absolutly no reason to do so.

Firstly I don't understand why posting his experiences and suspicions is playing amateur detective.

Having read the thread I can't understand the animosity towards OP. Whatever happened to freedom of speech.

I have now checked my cc statements and am grateful its been brought to my attention.
  • Thank you all

like i said before " on every forum theres always a few " but they get found out pretty quickly :rotfl:.

If i can help just 1 person by posting this then my deed is done on this forum.

and the fact your comments were defamatory without absolutly an ounce of evidence on the knowledge is irrelevent?

Im sure if your bank phoned and accused you, your wife or family of being responsible without any reason too you would be offended

    Weres the difference?

Why is it this board thinks that only the consumers should be protected? you made a comment which could quite easily cause damage to your bank and they would have every right to take you to court for damages

and the worse thing? they did nothing wrong and dealt with your account immediatly
