the inflight entertainment is reasonably extensive (but you need to download their free app onto your own device before the flight to access it)
That is all really good to know, thanks Duckyduck. We are not all that good with technology but not being able to download an app would be OK - a good book could fill some of the gap and maybe some sleep if we are lucky. Is there something on their 'TV' to watch without the app or would it be a blank screen without the app, thanks?

We flew with United last month, 4 flights in total, all the IFE was regular seat back touchscreens, no downloading any apps. There was a good selection of movies and TV programmes available.

We are hoping to go to Newark from Glasgow next spring (excited and planning well ahead) without changing. We had to change at Heathrow before and I found it a bit stressful - although we managed OK. We were very tired coming back.

On the way back last time our main case weighed 23 kg and we had to move things into hand luggage at the last minute. This is why I am nterested in the hand luggage allowance with United Airlines - and the return fares being offered for us both seem very reasonable.

    Thanks WAYT.

If without changes, I guess more difficult and you seem happy with them, so..

    23kg isn't overweight :)

United's allowance is 50 pounds, and the scales in US airports are imperial, so a bag weighing 23kg or more will weigh over 50lbs and the check out person will flag this up.

To avoid this tedium always go for about 22.7kg or less.

The direct flights from Glasgow were why I started flying united! It's definitely worth it - leave Glasgow about 10/11am so not getting up at silly o'clock and still arrive in NY before a flight connecting in Heathrow. There's direct flight to Edinbrugh as well which might give you more options.

Personally I prefer Newark to JFK airport, but that might just be a familiarity thing, most of the journey from Newark into NYC definitely isn't the most scenic welcome to america, but it's fine and quite quick.

In terms of seats/in flight experience I think most airlines are much the same in economy tbh.

If your considering flying via Heathrow it's also worth considering Dublin, a separate ticket from GLA-Dub then Dub-USA is probably significantly cheaper, but just give yourself plenty of connection time.

As US airports go I definitely rate Newark as one of the nicer. I wouldn't hesitate to fly into there.

Didn't think of that. Though no self respecting UK airline would bother you for being 300 grams over.

I have to apologize WAYT (and to BA) as the amount 'over' was about 2 kg - my mistake, sorry.

AN UPDATE - Tickets booked now as United Airlines Economy. One checked bag at 23 kg is allowed 62 linear inches in the hold and one cabin bag at 45 linear inches. I am not sure about the cabin bag weight as I cannot find it. I think I remember the Travel Agent saying 7 kg. Also allowed one Personal item to equal 36 linear inches.

We were to fly from Glasgow but have been advised it is now Edinburgh to Newark.

Thank you all again for your interest, replies and very helpful information. If anyone knows if the cabin bag weight is 7 kg please let me know as I can only see the size as 36 linear inches.

    Many thanks.
