Mail order very large item not checked when delivered.
Hi there, can anyone advise.
I have a very large garden item from Homebase. I haven't checked it nearly two months after arrival simply because it's too big to open in the house and the ground wasn't prepared for it.
Now I have opened it, the metal supports are twisted and bent beyond use. The funding for it was Credit Card. Does anyone know if Homebase can be funny about stuff not checked promptly after delivery or not?

Yes they can, like any other retailer. You will struggle as anything can happen in 2 months.0

When you say "twisted and bent beyond use", is this something that could have been caused by yourself (or someone you employed to install the item) or is it obviously a manufacturing defect?
If it could be down to you then you may have a hard job getting Homebase to rectify but if it'd obviously a manufacturing defect it might not be too much of a problem.
Without knowing exactly what the problem is, no one can really give too much meaningful advice.0 -
a very large garden item from Homebase . . .
two months later . . .
have opened it, the metal supports are twisted and bent beyond use . . .
Come on now, what would you think if you were the vendor?
What the 'eck is it?0 -

Metal Poles and one of them is bent at 45 degrees in a package weighing probably over 50 kilos so could have possibly gone in the box at the manufacturers unnoticed, but more likely happened in transit, because the weight of the other parts resting on it could have done it.
It's that kind of mild steel that if I attempt to bend it back, will most likely snap off.Warning: any unnecessary disclaimers appearing under my posts do not bear any connection with reality, either intended, accidental or otherwise. Your statutory rights are not affected.0 -

Using the same argument it is therefore just as likely that it happened post delivery whilst in your possession.0 -

That perhaps blaming it on its handling during delivery might backfire if Homebase then make the same point I did.
Perhaps I should have elaborated, so my apologies.0 -
I'd suggest : identifying which parts are damaged, taking photos of the damage, and then writing to Homebase to ask them to send you some replacement parts.
Start by saying that the rest of the product is good ; and say that you only just opened the box, hence the delay in noticing, and that their packing method probably needs improving.
Only if they reply saying you'll have to pay, do you have a dispute.
Customer Services of any organisation, have very flexible rules ; so if the damaged parts are a small proportion of the total cost, then even if it is out of policy, they might still do it for free.
Be polite, it's amazing what you can get if you ask nicely.0 -
