The typo was "I would hazard a guess that texts messages have a standard rate of 12p per minute on your PAYG plan?" where "minute" should have said "message" to which you responded with "How do minutes come into texting ? Texting isn't charged based on minutes is it, I thought that was only for calls."

We get that you sent the messages from Spain. This means you were "roaming". The cost of making calls, sending texts, and using data while "roaming" in EU/EEA countries and territories changed on 15 June 2017.

Before that date, for calls made and texts sent while roaming in the EU you paid the rate capped throughout the EU by EU regulation. On 15 June 2017 the regulations changed. After that date you paid the same rate as you pay in the UK when calling and texting UK numbers - hence the increase. If you had a more modern phone plan, calls and texts would have become inclusive in your allowance. If you prefer to pay for calls by the minute, and pay for texts individually, there are many providers charging a lot less than yours.

While you are using your phone and roaming in the EU there's now no uncertainty about what you pay to call and text UK numbers, numbers in the country you are visiting and numbers in all of the other EU/EEA countries and territories. You will pay the same as you do while using your phone in the UK to call and text UK numbers. This means that a bad deal in the UK now becomes a bad deal throughout the EU.
