Your husband has made two credit applications in short amount of time after getting late payment markers - have you checked if its just a single late marker, just in a later post you said it from a spend from a while ago - so he shouldn't make any more applications for the next six months, as that will make him seem desperate for credit and more likely to get rejected. In terms of the late payment what creditors see with the CRA is recent performance and a worse state, so if a payment was missed and then not sorted out for 4 months that is worse than one sorted out straight away. What compounded this is your husband closing the account straight away - it will show as been closed in its worst state and you won't see whether it was closed by the company or the user.
That's in the past now and your big concern is the hire car company. Have you queried with them what reserve they will put on. I know last time I went it was €300 - similar to you I had my own excess policy and the hire co made me sign a waiver so that I was aware that I could be landed with a large bill of 1000's because I didn't take out their policy, but the hold put on the card was still the standard.0 -
Yeah we might have to do that. I've already queried if I can add myself as another driver and they told me I can but I have to do it there when we pick the car up.
I'm really worried about hubby's credit issue as he's the main earner and we are hoping to buy another car soon as mine's on its last legs. Not to mention hoping to move house next year and up our mortgage.
I'm so cross we're in this situation.0 -
So you received an e-mail from Barclaycard saying you had a new statement. You ignored it.
You received an e-mail saying that payment was due. You ignored it.
Presumably next month you received another e-mail saying another statement was ready to view. You ignored it.
Eventually your husband called Barclaycard and paid. He didn't even bother to ask what the amount was for (which would have been my first question) and presumably neither of you have bothered to access internet banking to check the statement to see what the charge was for. If you don't have online statements you would receive paper statements so one way or another you have access to a statement to find out.
Then your husband decided to close his one and only credit card account for no apparent reason. You really have only yourselves to blame.
Also a single isolated late payment would not have had the devastating effect on your husband's credit files that you claim. Was it a late payment or did you ignore things for so long it became a default and it was not your husband who cancelled the card but Barclaycard who defaulted it?
What a sanctimonious silly post.
How exactly does this help the op ? She has already said they made a mistake and need help not reminding and carting off to the tower.0 -

I can see why it's annoying, but that's why you need to set up online banking, keep it up to date and not forget your passwords (Lame excuse, frankly!) and actually check your statements every month, even if you haven't used them. If you're the victim of fraud the fraudster isn't going to care if you haven't used the cards, are they?
If an unknown charge appeared, you would have known about it and dealt with it before, not after gaining late payment markers for ignoring legitimate e-mails.
Yes, there's lots of phishing about, but if you get an e-mail from your bank, and they have your correct details, at least investigate. If you don't trust the e-mail, go to where it tells you independently (So if it says to check your statement, do so via the banks website, not the e-mail), if the information tallies, it's legit.
Finally, tell your husband off for obviously cancelling the card in anger. Anger that was totally misplaced as unless if BC charged you the £50 themselves (They didn't), they're only billing you, whoever charged the money should have been the people to be annoyed at, or, possibly him if he had a yearly sub to something and forgot to cancel it!
You've been given links to check your credit files. See what they say. One missed payment wont do any long term damage but you may have other things that may be unknown to you that can be ringing alarm bells also. Avoid any further credit applications for now and until you can see what's up on your credit files also.

Thankyou for all the helpful advice. (The unhelpful advice, no so much!! )
Short term plan is to take our holiday car rental/insurance in my name with hubby as a named driver. I can cancel our original car rental agreement without any penalty, and the excess policy we have only charges £10 admin charge to make it in my name.
Also, I'm phoning Barclaycard first thing tomorrow (or rather hubby is, with me there) to find out exactly what the spending on that card was. I'm intending explaining to them exactly what happened and see what they say.
I'm also going to get a detailed credit report for husband, and on the basis of that see where we go from there.
Needless to say, a few lessons learned the hard way with this experience.0 -
P.S. Enjoy your holiday. Don't fall for any scams, and don't bring back any parcels that the nice man said he'd give you a few quid to bring through customs for his friend. Most brands of washing powder can be purchased in the UK.:)0

Don't forget you need to BOTH get your credit reports from the three main credit reference agencies and check them thoroughly to make sure everything is correct.
They can be obtained for free from:
-Noddle
-Clearscore
-MSE Credit Club (on this site).0 -
When is it your going away ?
Could still apply for a credit card and ask for a suitable limit, depends when your going though, if its this week well you might be out of luck, if 2 weeks you might be ok.0 -

As stated, you can get all of your credit reports for free, and in total should take less than half an hour to get.
Clearscore for Equifax
MSE Credit Club for Experian
Noddle for CallCredit
Remember to get your husband as well as you to sign up as you'll have different credit histories, even if they're linked via Joint Accounts etc.

Going away on Saturday so no time now for receiving cards etc; I've changed the car hire to be in my name, and I have a credit card so that should be ok. I'll put husband on as named driver.
Long term, I'm desperate to speak to Barclaycard but when I phoned them last night their systems were down and I was told to call back this morning; however husband is now at work until 11 tonight so we'll have to do it then. So many obstacles!!
We've both signed up for the credit club here (on the advice of MSE) and got a quick report for us both that way which is definitely helping to see what's ok and what isn't. We will get a more comprehensive one as well. As I thought, it's the default on the card that's done it for him.0
