Freecycle is it corrupt??

lightisfading is correct, that is likely to be what happened and if the mods spotted it they would have emailed the poster and possibly popped them back on moderation in future. My first reply was witty and intellectual but I lost it so you got this one instead

I see, sorry I haven't read that before. How do you come off moderation, is it just if you've been a member for a certain amount of time? I've seen about 3 other posts with similar sort of things from different people recently too, seems silly that they're allowed to post 'sob stories' whereas I can't even say that I'm moving into an unfurnished house. I would email them but I think I'd come across as a bit mean if I moaned about people asking for things for their disabled children :eek:D'you know, in 900 years of space and time, I've never met anyone who wasn't importantTaste The Rainbow :heartsmil0

Claire Bear - it depends on the group. Some groups might do it automatically after a month or two, others might wait til you've made a certain number of posts, others might be moderated posting only - best to check with your moderator really and they can tell you
I know it seems unfair but it is most likely that the sob-story people are just slipping through the net cus they're unmoderated, they're not 'allowed' to post them! Unfortunately most groups have to have a system like this as moderating each and every post would be a nightmare, and would mean your posts would hang about for ages before appearing: moderating a freecycle group is a LOT of work!

I think it also depends on what the moderators view as a sob story.
Personally, I don't consider a simple, "I've just moved and am looking for" to be a sob story but draw the line at the ones that give their tragic life history or, basically, use more than 5 words or so of explanation.
But it depends on the group, the individual moderators and the mix of members. Each group will be a little bit different as it is an organisation based on local communities and they are all different. Each moderator is different, even though they may have agreed an approach, when it comes to making an on the spot decision there are many shades of grey between black and white.
As lightisfading says, it is a lot of work and involves a good few judgement calls, and what members see the moderators doing on the groups is just a tiny fraction of the whole job.My first reply was witty and intellectual but I lost it so you got this one instead

Thought id jump in and post to a reply i got for 1 of my items
Its a dvd player, but the old kind, when they were chunky. I didn't mention it in my post as its a working dvd player, thought that would be enough.
So when someone asked for it and i replied saying yes they could have it. They replied saying 'great, is it fairly newish, like slimline' I replied and obviously said it wasn't but it works fine.
They replied saying 'i don't want it, im not coming all that way to collect a old dvd player, i wanted a slimline one' :rotfl:
I didn't reply, but i felt like replying and telling them to go buy one then. I mean really its a dvd player and if you can't afford one, what the shame in having an older, just bigger version of one, that way you can still watch dvds and save up for a better one.Mummy to two girls: October 2013 and February 20160 -
Well I live in London and have had no problem at all.
Although, I have to say, I have just got rid of stuff and not gone for anything that was offered.
The one time I did want something (a high chair for my grandson), I posted a wanted and someone responded. This is maybe a better solution.
For all those who say they never get anything, I must say when I have adverstised something I get at least 4 replies and once I had 12.0 -
I am convinced Freecycle has been ruined. I wanted to pass on useable stuff to people who might not be able to afford to buy it, but I listed some items last year, and all the replies I got were from "women" saying things like "ooh that will be lovely in my little girl's bedroom" but it was always blokes in transit vans who came to collect.
My stuff goes to the charity shop now.My Debt Free Diary I owe:

I love freecycle but the lack of manners from some of the users infuriates me:mad:
I recently gave away an Apple i mac and had over 100 replies for it, the amount that just said "I want it" was breathtaking but the one that said "I want this please deliver it to xxxxx after 8pm on Saturday" didnt even get a reply:mad::mad:
Sorry got all ranty there:o0 -

The ones that just said "I want it" wouldn't have got replies from me, either. I usually ignore any requests that don't have a please or thank you in them.0
