Our group does not forbid items being re-sold, providing you state your intention to sell when you contact the offerer about the item.I am a Travel Agent My company’s ATOL/ABTA numbers are E7760/3970. After my mini-rant yesterday, I am having a nice Freecycle experience today. I offered a mobile phone charger and it is being collected later today by the local Samaritans group.
I also offered a small item of furniture and someone has asked me if I can drop if off at his secondhand shop on Friday!I am a Travel Agent My company’s ATOL/ABTA numbers are E7760/3970. I have had mixed experiences with Freecycle, but I would not say it is corrupt. The whole point of it is to give away an item that you no longer need, to someone in need of it, to avoid it going to landfill. If the person you give it to chooses to sell it on, it's up to them.
I have given away many things in the past and everyone who has taken something has been really grateful. I have also received a couple of things which I have made great use of.
Yes, some people don't turn up to get things, some people send abrupt emails, and some people ask for ridiculous items, but these people are far outweighed by the kindness and generosity of all the others.0 -
When I put things on Freecyle, I like them to go to people who are not going to sell them. If that was the case, I would rather give it to my local charity shop.0

I had a fab Freecycle experience this week. Someone offered Guitar Hero I and II for PS2 nad I didnt think Id have a chance of being offered them....but I was! We collected later that day and the lovely person asked if I could make use of Singstar for PS2 also, complete wiht about 5 discs.
My boys love it! I took a bunch of flowers to show my gratitude but now dont know wether to be pleased or not after hearing my 8yr old boy belt out 80's classic pop for 2 days.LOL.

Hi There
I am usually over on OS but have recently discovered freecycle.
I have found it really handy in getting shot of things i would normally have to pay to dispose of - eg a kingsize bed base.
The three groups i belong to - our house sits at the border of all three areas, are very strict with how posts are written. Selling and offering services is forbidden, as is wishlist posting that looks like a request from the argos catalogue. Its a three strikes and you are out policy and members are encouraged to report those who are flouting the law.
I am sure that some folk sell on goods, but as the purpose is to keep stuff out of landfill, most of what is offered is pre-owned, or is left over - eg laminate, top soil, loft insulation, flower pots, surplus seedlings, odd furniture. We got a great solid wood bookcase from there last month, so so far so good!
Guess its down to the mods to keep freecycle true to its original aims

I too live on the borders of 3 freecycle groups. I posted a WANTED message across all 3. One site didn't show it I emailed the mod asking why? They replied it was against the rules to cross post messages across freecycle sites. There should be a length of time before asking the same Want of another site. I apologised for breaking the rules. Lo and behold a couple of hours later someone posted a Wanted message to the site but asking for about 5 different things. Now I thought there was a limit of the number of things you could ask for in 1 month.
It's a case of allowing some rules to be broken and others not.0 -
TB, depends on how much you bung the mods i guess.. lolLong time away from MSE, been dealing real life stuff..

and what's wrong with asking for a caravan? I had one that if I knew about freecycle a couple of years ago would have given it away! I know people with old scooters and lawnmowers sitting in their garages too.
I don't think we have the right to judge what people ask for, its pretty easy and quick to delete the messages after seeing the header if it's irrelevant or if you don't want to read wanted ads then i'm sure there is a setting to filter ur mail into different folders to delete. Granted not everyone has the best of intentions, but thats the world these days. No point dwelling on it, is my opinion0
