  • The ethics of my local freecycle were questioned and a new service was set up called realcycle instead, not totally sure of all the details, I remember getting an email a while back and I registered on the new realcycle. I think another freecycle group has been set up for our area also though.
*wonders when they will make dressing gowns acceptable day wear?*
No new toiletries challenge - use up the stash first!

I would guess that the main loser to Freecycle is business especially the retail side.
So as Freecycling becomes more effective you can expect them to be rubbished and pulled down, and calls for them to be taxed and health and safety to be implemented, and so on, even banned.
The last thing Freecycle needs is to be split up into smaller groups like realcycle.

The problem is where ever there are people giving away items you'll get people asking for them with the intention of selling them on and making a profit.

That's fair enough if all you want is to save yourself the cost of taking it to the tip, but most people would prefer to give their items to people who will use it.

Ebay is certainly more corrupt than freecycle ever will be!
I think your missing the point, Ebay and Freecycle arent corrupt, its people who use them.

People like Ebay because it is anonymous, and buy and sell anyway so less likely to be corrupt.I don't do it, but to go thru all that hassle of bidding and posting items, the Post Office are making more money than the dealer.
With Freecycle you will be looking the giver in the eye.

Had one person muck me about over collection of an item recently, but apart from that it's all been good! I think I'm lucky with my local groups as I've not seen any sign of corruption at all.

I have to admit I find it a bit rude when people don't put please or thank you in their wanted ads, but that's probably just me :)

apart from a few no shows, (which really bug me) the vast majority of my freecycling has been positive. just like real life, 95% are honest decent peeps.
and to be honest, if it ends up on ebay then fine, its been recycled!
anything apart from the landfill is ok with me.
    Get some gorm.
  • Here's one for you.
On my local group, a woman caused quite a stink wanting (demanding!) a washing machine that must come from a non-smoking house.
    How rude.
The general idea I think was that smokers are filthy and horrible and smell. The poor woman couldn't bear the thought of meeting up with one even if they were going to give her a washing machine.
Even as a non-smoker it really made my blood boil.
