Vehicle Roof Cargo bags

Just as an aside: You wouldn't believe the difference in fuel that a roof box, or even just the bars use: I deliver a lot of 4x4 pick ups, and those fitted with just roof bars will use around 10% more. I was astonished when I realised this, but it's definitely the case. Take the bars off when not in use!0

I drive a C class and put some bars on a month ago.
I went with Thule wing bars and like the previous poster suspected my mpg would drop considerably.
It hasn't.....
Have done 3000 miles and in that time not noticed any discernible difference in mpg although a bit of additional road noise.
To respond to OP we have a roof bag, and its ok but the wood support at the bottom often needs reinforcing as the original was cheap plyboard. Its a decent bit of kit, have used it a few times but I would definitely go for a second hand roofbox if I was using it more than once a year. Will cost the same, last twice as long, and be far more secure.0 -
I have decided to plunge for the Bermude Flex Folding Roofbox. There are slightly cheaper ones out there but the reviews online seem ok for the Bermude.
To ukjoel: - I would love a traditional hard box but the dimensions of the 250L and 470L boxes is considerable. I live in a small studio flat with no garage or outside storage areas. A traditional box would literally have to be stored in the bedroom or living area or remain on the car roof 100% of the time. The folding box has the advantage of being kept in the boot or something.

Hi,
We've come back from france and seen one of the Flex bags, on a Dutch car. They said they bought it online in the Netherlands. We've come home but can't find a UK stockist, so we're considering popping back to France to get one (Norauto is French).
Where did you see one for sale in the U.K.? I can't find one anywhere!!
We're looking at the Bermude Flex 5400 or 5700 (Dutch chap had 5700, Norauto website says 5400). All a bit frustrating, as it looks excellent and we really want one now. We currently have the Thule Ranger 90 which is smaller and a devil to load and get the zip shut, but has lasted well at 8 years old, still perfect condition.0 -

I only fit my roof bars and box when I actually need them, but find that my MPG actually improves - I put this down to the way that I moderate my driving style knowing how the extra weight and height affects my braking distance and centre of gravity.
I do notice a massive increase in air noise round the door seals.0 -
If you want 100% waterproof and small for storage, look out for the dry bags that canoeists use. I have three and have used them strapped to a motorbike and on the rear rack of my MX-5 with no problems. The best one is made by Ortlieb, and the other two are from Aldi when they were on special. These are a bit stiffer in use, but work just as well. However, being soft bags they need a rack to keep them off the paintwork. They may not work as well with roof bars. But for cheap and effective, you can't beat them.If someone is nice to you but rude to the waiter, they are not a nice person.0
