Vehicle Roof Cargo bags
Hi,
Does anyone have, used, have experience of etc. vehicle roof cargo bags that attach to standard roof racks (i.e. car does not have roof rails).
I need extra storage in the car and would like a roof box but living in a flat I have absolutely nowhere to store a standard roof box. I noticed on the internet that you can buy large waterproof cargo bags that attach to the roof rack.
Just wondering what the general consensus is with them and whether any one can recommend one for a standard roof rack?
Thanks

What are you planning on carrying in it?
I would be wary of damaging the roof either by scratching it or denting as it looks like the bags sit directly on the roof.0 -

The ones I am looking at sit on top of the roof bars, plus there is a foldable version on the halfords website that definitely looks like it sits on top of the roof bars (will make sure it does before buying). There are some that appear to sit on top of the roof though and I would avoid that type.
It is to carry family holiday and camping gear mainly. Just need more space in the vehicle. Would like a bigger car but can't afford that at the moment.0 -
Have you thought of renting a roof box and bars? Saves the initial outlay and the problem of having to store them somewhere...0

We've bars & a bag, but the lining board cracked (we did rather stuff the bag with sleeping bags & clothes, but we Resisted the Temptation to jump on it), so now the bag is tucked gently onto the roof and held firmly in place with bungees.
It feels like driving the car with a concrete quiff, but it's easy to load & unload & pack out of the way, so it's more or less working for us

That option isn't really viable for us as we get away quite a lot and most of the time we decide last minute to go based on work arrangements etc. Up to now we have just been making do with the space available.
This year is a bit different in that we have confirmed 2 more weeks of UK camping, 1 family dash to the North of Scotland, 3 weekends of camping and one 15hour drive to the continent for 10 days. There will be a few none planned trips in there also.
Thanks for the suggestion.0 -

Do you know the name of your bag?0 -
Currently leaning towards the Bermude Flex Folding Roofbox. Seems to get good reviews on the sites I am looking at.
The Sherpack 100 Foldable Roof box also looks similar.
Anyone have any suggestions or concerns or use it?0 -
Make sure the length fits the gap between your roofbars.Censorship Reigns Supreme in Troll City...0

We have a Sherpack (link) and it's great because it doesn't take the space of a roof box to store it when not in use. Don't overload it and don't drive round with an empty bag on your car and it's great.
However it is designed to fix to roof bars rather than a roof rack, I would think it would be difficult to attach to a rack (depending on the construction of the rack). Having said that I can't imagine why you want one if you already have a roof rack as they sort of serve the same purpose?0 -

Sorry, was using the 2 terms interchangeably. For reference to this discussion I mean roof bars i.e. 2 bars across the roof of the car. Around this part of Merseyside lots of people say roof rack for roof bars in discussions.
The sherpack looks decent may end up going for that.0
