My friend has a Hitachi TV with a remote control RC 4862 which he got from Argos and it has stopped working it will not change channels I have looked at the Argos website and thee are no RC 4862 remotes listed but there are one for all remotes listed will that do the job ?
Or on the other hand it is possible that the problem could be with the TV and not the remote

What is the issue with the remote ?
Has he tried a new set of batteries ?0 -
Batteries can not be the problem as he can switch the TV on and off with the RC0

Have you tried ebay or Amazon - looks like they;re around £150

Has he dropped a drink on it and or dropped it? That's what did for my volume button although channel changes still work ok.
If it's listed in the information as one of the TVs it works on he should be fine. Otherwise could he return it under their returns policy? All shall be well, and all shall be well, and all manner of things shall be well.
Pedant alert - it's could have, not could of.0 -
My money is still on batteries, when they get weak some buttons will work and others don't, try some before spending out on another remote.0

Look at the "business end" of the remote with a mobile phone camera while pressing the buttons. Most will see the infra-red.
Buttons tend to fail by use, so that explains why the channel button has failed. The infra-red codes are well publicised, so a universal one just needs to be told which language to talk.
Argos might well have a returns policy if the part doesn't do the job. Get the staff at the counter to promise it will work, then buy it in the morning, so you can bring it back the same day.0 -

This.
The on/off code for the TV is often the simplest one that requires the least power so can work even if the batteries don't have enough charge left to do the other functions, especially on something like an "all for one" style remote which will typically use more power than a dedicated one.
I've seen and had some really weird issues with low battery levels on remote controls including some functions working but others not, or you press the button for one thing and something completely different happens (volume up changes the input for example).0
