If you are travelling M4 then you could visit Tintern Abbey, Raglan Castle and Big Pit, Blaenavon on the way to Brecon Beacons.
St Fagans museum is also worth a visit outside Cardiff,
A lot depends on whether you are interested in.

If you are travelling this weekend, avoid Swansea, it is the annual Welsh Air Show and they are expecting 200,000 visitors over the two days, the traffic will be dreadful

Not far from Swansea are Dan yr Ogof caves,

    http://www.showcaves.co.uk/

Big Pit is well worth the time.
Not far from Big Pit is the Brecon Mountain Railway

A tour around Cardiff Castle is great.

Of course Gower was the first area in UK to be designated an area of outstanding natural beauty.
It's your money. Except if it's the governments.
  • What dates are you visiting? There's usually lots of events on in and around Cardiff. I usually check the visit wales page on Twitter (@visitwales) which has lots of events.

14th to 16th July is International food fest down Cardiff bay. It's a great event and I go every year.

@cardiff_events on Twitter is also a good page to see what's going on.

    Hope you enjoy your stay

I'd second Dan-Yr-Ogof caves and on the same day you could visit Craig-Y-Nos country park, if you are looking for somewhere to stay there is also Craig-Y-Nos Castle. It is very beautiful there. Not the cheapest place to stay but I've only ever stayed for a wedding so prices may have been inflated for the event at around £150 a night a few years ago.

Brecon itself is a very pretty town and not too far to drive up to the Elan Valley or even stay in the town and go on the canal bank walk. Or you could always walk up Pen-Y-Fan, at a casual pace takes about an hour and the views from the summit are astounding.

If you are going to Margam Park anyway you could spend a few hours wandering the grounds and looking around the manor.

There really is so much to do and you are not here for anywhere near long enough to do it all. Cardiff, Swansea and Brecon have theatres so worth seeing what's on when you are here

If the OP follows up all the suggestions, he'll need a fortnight's holiday.
