New telewest Charges

I got a leaflet through with my bill today about the new charges and to say that they were confusing is an understatement.

Can anyone out there explain them to me in plani basic English (esp the bit about free calls, except I can not see anywhere on the leaflet that tells you what hours that applies to)

Can't believe they are now going to charge for Cable to Cable calls when they were free before.

I would like to try and work out if it is a good deal for the customer, the new charges or if TW are the only ones going to gain.

ANy opinions would be greatfully received

The main difference between NTL & Telewest is that T'west are doing free weekend calls and it is to all geographical numbers not just local calls as NTL are doing. The thing is they've put up the line rental by 50p (now £10.50) and have increased daytime calls from 3ppm to 4ppm. You can read Telewest's tariff charges here. These prices will be before any of the price increases they must have just announced. I couldn't find on their website any notice to say that prices are increasing. I currently receive 512k broadband (with no caps/limitations) for £17.99 a month so I hope they're not increasing those prices!

Broadband prices will remain static for the time being.

When did it change that they charged for cable to cable calls in the evenings.

It has been a while since using them as we use to my MIL nearly every night for free.

Mind you that was 18 months ago.

Thanks for the info as I have not had anything to say the prices are going up.

But they have just upgraded my broadband for ffree. From 256k to 512K.

    Yours

Can you split the phone and broadband off from Telewest and just use their cable TV service?

You can but they charge £1* extra per month if you have the TV but not the telephone.

If you already have the the TV and telephone with them and are outside your minimum term then just move to BT (assuming you were thinking of doing that) and when they say they'll put the price up of the TV then just say that you'll move to Sky - we did.

We had TV, phone & broadband but moved the phone to BT for free (kept the number) and then telewest then said they charge extra per month for not having their phone line. I looked up prices on Sky and worked out that we could save £6 per month if we were on Sky (cable charge £15 per month for an additional cable tv box - where as Sky only charge £10 per month for additional subscription). That along with the extra £1* cable wanted I threatened to cancel the TV and move to Sky. T'west then said they would match Sky's prices for 12months and then review it after then.

    * I mention £1 but it may have been £2 as can't be sure!

They currently don't charge for cable to cable calls during evening but the calls are subject to a 6p connection charge though (basically 6p per call). From July, it looks like they are charging normal price for calls during the evening (2p) whether they are cable-to-cable or other landlines.

I currently use their BB but they upgraded me from 256k to 512k 2 months ago because I threatened to cancel their BB and move over because the likes of AOL charge £17.99 for 512k. They said they were in the middle of upgrading customers anyhow but upgraded me right there and then to stop me from moving.

I never would have moved to AOL anyhow as I personally don't like them. In my profession (I fix/repair/build computers, etc) I have never come across such a problematic software than AOL's.

I get 2.272Mb from BT (but I am 150 yards from the exchange) for that price (although there is a 1Gb per month cap).
Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. Hence, I have now deleted links to my previous 'pearls of wisdom'. I sincerely hope they helped save some of you money.

From one month to the next I don't know how much I would use but I know it would be above the 1gb limit. Cable's (like AOLs) are uncapped and unrestricted as some companies like TalkTalk's BB is uncapped but is restricted to only web traffic and any other traffic (p2p, email, etc) may be restricted to a lower speed.

Also, I live too far away from the BT exchange to get 2mb - the highest is 1mb and that is only subject to test being carried out by BT to confirm this. 512k was the only speed they could guarantee I could get!

Hm, I just got my TW bill today with this info enclosed... I'm still within my first 12-month contract..

When I got notification of my gas or elec charges going up, there's always a section about "If you do not wish to continue your service with us as a result of these increases..." .. since I was going to drop my phoneline anyway, is this a way to bypass the 12-month contract?

    Cheers,
    Gavin.
