Mispelled Name On Airline Ticket - Australia

Hi there,
Made a mistake booking a 'cheap' airline ticket to Australia by entering 'Pete' as my first name instead of 'Peter.' I go by Pete in all of my every day personal and business life...but my passport and driving license reads 'Peter'.
I phoned the website it was booked through (TravelTrolley) and they said if it had only been one flight each way it would be fine to change it. But because there was a short hop flight on the return leg, with a different airline, it couldn't be changed. Both airlines apparently allow changes if they're the only airline on the booking but because there are two airlines on the booking, it cannot be changed.
The option given to me was cancel the ticket and rebook, at the cost of over £500. What are people's experience with 'chancing it' in a situation like this? I hear Australia is quite strict with their travel documents and visas 100% matching, can anyone confirm this?
Thanks.

I would just fly 'as is'. But that is just me.0

I have a friend who's a fairly frequent flyer and who has flown using a shortened version of his first name for years. I can't guarantee anything but I would be shocked if you were to be denied boarding because you used Pete for Peter. Look at this way, can you find a single story of anyone having been denied boarding because they used a commonly accepted shortened version of their first name? I've never seen one myself and there must be thousands of passengers travelling this way every day.0

Glen, that thought had actually crossed my mind! The flight isn't until Feb 2018 so I might just look into that, thanks!0
