Money Moral Dilemma: Should I take back my purchase now the sales are on?

This week's MoneySaver who wants advice asks...

I recently bought some shorts, but have just spotted the same ones in a new sale. Should I return them, get my money back and re-buy them at the lower price, even though I was happy to pay the higher price initially?

Unfortunately the MSE team can't always answer money moral dilemma questions as contributions are often emailed in or suggested in person. They are intended to be enjoyed as a point of debate and discussed at face value.

Well it is a bit cheeky and you don't have an automatic right to the discount. I work in retail and get this all the time and it means we sometimes don't hit sales figures and employees don't get bonuses that they have worked really hard for.

Oh, absolutely, if not worn and still with all the tags on and assuming the store has a 'no quibble' return within x number of days, and it's within that timeframe.
(I assumed all that was a given in the OP)
And I would only do it if I could buy whatever it is, in my size, in the sale first and then return the full price item.

I assume you mean he doesn't have the automatic right to a refund?
He does if that's what the store policy is.

Chances are that your size is not available, so suss it out first. If you can get the right size, go for it.

Depends if the difference in price is significant - lots of people (inc my OH!) don't take into account the cost of petrol/bus fare/car parking etc. when going back to a store.

how much will it 'cost' you to return them? how much is your time 'worth' to you. if it's a fiver difference and it'll cost you 3 quid to get into town and an hour of your time i'd say don't bother!
