I'm pretty sure of this as well.

    correct.

also the ABS light needs to cycle.

seen an EU citizen, when i was waiting in a garage, working on another car. fitting an airbag defeat device in a car to fool the ECU into cycling the light.

scarred the !!!!! out of me .

look what a quick ebay seach finds:

the GOV need to find a way of stopping this. myabe a 5 year airbag inspection.

Could you be thinking of the ABS light?

Both the ABS light and Airbag (SRS) light should come on for a few moments when the ignition is armed and on most cars will go out.

The light arming and coming on lets the tester know the bulb is working and when it goes out it lets the tester know it's working ok (to best his knowledge)

In a car where a SRS light or ABS light doesn't come on during the ignition because the bulb is defective or removed, then this would normally fail an MOT if done by the book, but they rarely are.

    ABS, yes.
    Airbag/SRS, no.

You mean the test needs changing? The manual defines the test contents, testing methodology, and fail criteria.

Perhaps it does, perhaps it doesn't. The fact is that - as the test currently stands - no airbag light is explicitly NOT a fail.

The test originally had a missing ABS lamp as a failure but the manual was updated to remove this, there's no official reason I'm aware of but I've seen guesses from MOT testers that it's because there are cars that exist that the ABS light does not come at all unless there is a fault so there's no initial light for a self test.

Whatever the reason, a missing airbag light is not a current MOT failure and hasn't been for some time.

    Reference MOT.

SRS illumination is a different test compared to ABS illumination or lack of it in this case, hence why some clowns can remove a bulb or black it out to bypass any reason for rejection on SRS illumination.

I believe some manufacturers, certain Daewoo models spring to mind where SRS does not illuminate unless there is an actual fault. This is how we have ended up with a one fit testing system that can be abused and does get abused.

well why doesn't the GOV list the cars that don't illuminate the light, like they have a list of cars which are exempt from the more stringent emissions test due to being built but not registered before the lower limit was introduced.

it wouldn't take much, they could add it as a note to the electronic system the tester uses to log the MOT.

hmm, maybe a change.org petition is needed.
