Places to buy North West between Liverpool & Manchester

  • You could look at the Sale/Altrincham area. I have family on Merseyside (just outside Formby) and find it quite easy to get over to visit them. Just a quick hop over the Warburton toll bridge (toll is a meagre 12p), then down the A57 to the M6 at J21 and I can be there in 40-50 minutes, even in rush hour. You have the tram service to the city centre as an option to get to work too.

You could also look at Lymm - more of a village feel, but again, still reasonably easy access to M6 and M56.
  • Leigh, Atherton, Astley Tyldesley, Golborne, all these are very close to East Lancs Rd, probably closer to Manchester than Liverpool, but not too expensive.

I have moved quite often in the last 7 years so I can give you my personal opinion about a few areas.

Avoid: Castleton and Middleton. I didn't feel safe, groups of youths everywhere...The houses are very cheap but I would never buy there.

Altrincham is very nice! It was one of my favourite places but I found it too expensive for what is offered.

Lymm is lovely but expensive and too "boring" for me...The houses were quite old fashioned.

I have settled now in Great Sankey (Warrington) and I am saving money to buy a house here in the next couple of years. It is reasonably priced and you have quick access to the motorways.A train station will soon be built in Chapelford as well. My partner also works in Manchester City Centre, he travels by train (Warrington Central Station).

I have been advised by colleagues to avoid St Helens/Newton Le Willows.

Transpennine Express trains run a service between Liverpool and Manchester. Takes about 45 minutes.
  • Atherton is an interesting suggestion, my girlfriend currently lives in lie and gets the train from Atherton so might have a look. A lot of place such as Altrincham are outside my price range of around 150k.

I have been on that service many a time between Liverpool and Manchester. The train takes 45 minutes but over the journey is much longer and there often delayed on the way home.
