Places to buy North West between Liverpool & Manchester

Hey,
I'm a first time buyer looking to buy a property between Liverpool and Manchester. I have looked at a few places i.e. Warrington, Newton Le Willows, St Helens but am unfamiliar with any of the areas. I would like a place in-between Manchester and Liverpool as I am from Liverpool and all my friends and family are there, while I work in Manchester city centre, I have commuted from Liverpool for some time and it is quite tiring so I would prefer a shorter commute, but have the ability to travel easily to either.
I have a limited budget as I will be buying alone. I just need some advice on areas in the northwest, for example I know newton le willows is a nice area, but the properties I can afford are all generally in earlestown which I'm not as sure about and have heard bad things.
Any advice would be much appreciated.
Thanks,
Toby

How are you commuting - by road or by rail ?0

Either is fine.0

Around Bolton? Try north of the Liverpool/ Manchester line it is probably cheaper and nicer.0

If I were you I'd buy in Manchester, somewhere you can get a tram to work and also close to the M62 for visiting Liverpool. Maybe Eccles or parts of Trafford?
You go to work 5 days a week, presumably in rush hour. Visiting family and friends is presumably done mostly at weekends? You can be in Liverpool from Manchester in about 40 minutes outside of the busiest times.
Living halfway between wouldn't take that much off your commute as the busiest bits are always going to be entering and leaving Manchester city centre.0 -
Probably a little expensive, but Wilmslow? Decent train and links to the motorway. I used to live in Handforth which is part of Wilmslow but a lot cheaper.
Maybe Culcheth?

I live in Manchester now and I don't like it. I find it quite a miserable place.
I'd be hoping to move back to Liverpool eventually so buying closer makes that option easier.
I did look at Eccles as an close alternative but I again have no idea in regards to areas in Manchester.
Thanks for the recommendation so far.0 -

I'm originally from Warrington and lived there until 2014, there are a few nice areas close to the M56/62. Depends what you want though and budget, Croft area is quite rural and far enough to be away from the city life, but still 15/20 mins from the centre. The south side of Warrington is probably more expensive but perhaps the nicer side. I think they're new builds on the Burton-Wood side to the North of town but I think that side of town as quite industrial myself. Warrington is very blobby in nice/not so nice.
The Warrington area is great for transport links with the Liverpool Manchester train line running through it, and the North/South line heading to Blackpool/Crewe. Motorways speak for themselves. Warrington does tend to grind to a halt of an evening if the Viaduct is obstructed just to be aware of for winter commutes. I thought this is fairly nice
