Bring back the old days of one regional supplier who would send you a bill every quarter through the post and you would pay by cash or cheque for what you have used.

These days they want direct debits this direct debits that or they will punish you if you don't.

EDF Energy offer this on every tariff. Its the same price as a fixed DD, so you won't be paying anymore. Its called Direct Debit whole amount and is available for either monthly or quarterly billing.

I don't think its possible to sign up for it online. You'll need to ring them up to swap onto it. You can either sign up to DD online or via a broker site and then n switch payment methods once you've transferred. Or you could sign up directly through EDF's callcentre
  • After 6 months of total shambolic service from First Utility i would tell you to stay well away from them
My DD is supposed to be £55 per month and they have collected it twice
They decided they were increasing it to £230 per month and when questioned they couldn't give me an answer apart from its a mistake, on 2 occasions they have told me that the DD has been cancelled by the bank when it hasn't and i have then had to make a payment over the phone
20 minutes waiting on the phone and then cut off for no reason
Currently looking for a new supplier and switching this evening
  • Once smart meters have been fully rolled out I see no valid reason why every supplier cannot offer a monthly variable direct debit tariff for those people who want to pay their bills that way.

In fact it would be the only reason I would have a smart meter installed.
