I had an old photograph from when I was aged about 6-7, in a school group, so posted it on a local group for more names... and the names are coming in ... but, the more I looked at the photo, the more I realised "all those kids are so much smarter than me" ... there I am, at the back, wearing what I'd call normal kids' clothes, only, inspecting the photo, I realise that everybody else's clothes were bought and fitted them... and I think the hand-knitted cardigan I was wearing probably fitted me for another 3-4 years :) One is even wearing a shiny-buttoned, buttoned up jacket!

It's now all a bit embarrassing :) Thank goodness I was a bit "tucked away at the back" and not full frontal with my shabby-wear. :)

I've got one of mine, from when I was eight. Looking at it, we were a real mix, from smart-with-well-fitting-clothes to clothes-that-don't-fit-and-old-plimsolls. I was wearing a dress my mother had made for me*. The nicest boy in the class was from a family which must have been on what I think was then called National Assistance. He had a younger brother who was so aggressive that even the teenage boys in the area were scared of him, and three sisters who were nice.

*I mean my mother made it, not that she paid someone else to make it.

They do start to get all "precious" and "better than you" these days as they're all wearing "all the proper gear", from pricey shops... and I've not got anything like the relevant gear to be honest.... and sourcing a "waterproof/windproof coat" in my size would prove to be a challenge too far as few clothes are made in my size/fit.

And I get chronic ear-ache if it's windy/cold - so that discounts 8 months of the year. I feel faint if out in direct sunlight for more than 2 minutes - so that discounts a couple of weeks of the year... and if it's raining/cold it could take me days to warm up/dry out - and, with a house on "viewer alert" where'd I be drying all this dripping wet stuff?

AND ... they're pretty pricey, especially as the Ramblers has an Anti-Single policy of charging them so much more "per head" than any other members :)

    £35.85 for a single
£23.92 for each of a couple.

Would a children's size jacket fit you? And a knitted hat would keep your ears warm :) Handy things to have even if you don't fancy rambling.

They're mostly not for me though.
    OH feels the same.
The thing about walks is, though, that with a lot of them, you don't have to belong to a group.
The local authority ones....... they tell you when the walks are, and where to meet, and you just turn up, or not. No pressure, no 'belonging' to anything.

All through my school years I had hand-me-downs or secondhand stuff, especially school uniform, and that was at Grammar school. I had a relative who was older than me, and at the same school, so I tended to get her stuff.

I think I can count on the fingers of one hand the times I had anything new to wear. One time was going to a shop to get my Girl Guide's uniform. I suppose there wasn't a second-hand one available.
That was exciting! Going to a shop to get clothes!

I do remember once my mum making me a tartan kilt-type skirt, so I suppose that was sort of new.

Apart from that, it was every Christmas I got a new dress, and new pyjamas/nightie from an aunt, and new slippers from another aunt.

I remember the first time I was allowed to buy my own new dress. I think I was about 14 or 15. My mum went mad because she hated it, even though it really suited me, and she refused to let me wear it for about a year. (I won't say why, in case it identifies me....... it wasn't slutty or anything!)

If you want to know, I'll tell you elsewhere! :D

But if I have a look at my OS maps, I can work out a walk I want to do. Go when I want. Come back when I want. Stop and look at the view etc. etc.
I've always been the same. As soon as someone says "organised" I lose interest.
I honestly don't think I've missed anything by being like that.

    That's fine!

I quite like having the thinking done for me! :D

Plus, having gone on my own walk once and nearly been attacked by a bull, then nearly being sucked into a quagmire, followed by being shot at from a rifle range, and then nearly gassed to death by a sewage works, you can only get so much info from OS maps! :rotfl:

Well, true! I dined out on it for a while! :D

These days, though, it'd probably be a search and rescue jobbie!

It is very windy/windier at the coast.... noticeably so... almost daily. And the West is a lot windier than elsewhere.

I thought you had to join .... if you can go, for free, without joining, how come anybody joins?

I'd forgotten what a windy part of the country you're in. I should live there, as I love it when the wind wuthers in my ears.

I don't know why I'm arguing with you about what you like doing. Indisputably, you must be the world expert on that. :)

You know how it is. You mention a problem, and people rush to suggest solutions. In my case, apart from the famous computer, my solutions have always been worse than the problem. :)

Why does anyone pay the fee? Well, some people go every week or two. I am a member now, but nobody has ever asked to see my membership card, so I just pay up to help support them.
No reliance should be placed on the above! Absolutely none, do you hear?

Don't go on a walk with Spirit (lurker of NP thread) then ... the one time we met up for a walk, first we're traipsing over a field and I notice some HUGE deer with antlers eyeing us up ... and had to hotfoot it to a gate.... next we doubled back and up a muddy lane, then a narrow lane ... and there was a domestic dog going bonkers behind its gate and I bottled it and we turned back :)
