What happens now? Would they have him back as soon as an ITU bed becomes available?
It's not that simple ...
A bed might become available, but not the team required to do the op. Or a bed and the team would be available, but the theatre's booked for something else.
You need the right surgeon, the right team, the theatre booked... and then a bed. They aren't all sitting there doing surgery Mon-Fri 9-5. The surgeon will do X days for starters... maybe s/he does Mon-Tue surgery, Wed teaching, Thur surgery, Fri private work.
It's a bit like a wedding.... you can't rebook a church/vicar, cars, venue/food at the drop of a hat.... they need to all be brought together, in specific locations when there's a vacant spot.
The process is: they book the theatre/surgeon/team, get him in there .... then look to see if there's a bed .... and if there's not (as it went an hour ago) ... he's off home again. Repeat until there is a bed.
Because they can't add more beds/staff to the ward, the rest of the teams are hindered/waste time prepping for many operations that don't occur, then all the time to rebook and get ready again.
"Add more beds" they say ... if that were possible they'd do it. It's one of the bottlenecks in the system.
If there were enough beds, the ops would get done to schedule, more ops would be done as nobody'd be coming in for their 2nd/3rd/4th attempt.0 -

He waits for a new date, so pretty much back on the list, wait your turn again. He has been given self given injections for one of his tablets in case of a short notice date but apart from that, we haven't a clue.We made it! All three boys have graduated, it's been hard work but it shows there is a possibility of a chance of normal (ish) life after a diagnosis (or two) of ASD. It's not been the easiest route but I am so glad I ignored everything and everyone and did my own therapies with them.

This is another part of the problem. They can't then have him sitting waiting for "the next chance" because somebody else has that date booked.... there's a queue of people who have been given their dates/times and are lined up ready to go in. Maybe some of those ahead of him in the new queue have themselves already been turned away 1-2x in the recent past.
So, he can only go at the "back" of that queue as they can't disrupt all and everybody else's bookings to "fit him in" as "fitting somebody in" requires the surgeon, the team, the theatre .... and a bed.
Fingers crossed he's lucky next time! It's not easy is it, turning your life upside down, the anxiety and awkward "chit chat" with the patient for days up to the journey, the journey, the "fake jollity" once on site.... just to be told "Nope, not today. We'll be in touch".
They're just as frustrated as you .... but their life's not the one on the line ... and they're not going to now have to suffer the endless inter-family anger/arguments and tiffs as everybody's fraught.
Poor dad.
As for the short notice... you have to wonder if they need the surgeon, the team and the theatre.... nobody's going to "pull out and cancel their op" ... which leaves you with only one most likely scenario for an opening to occur!0 -
The danger is that he could be given a new date, get to theatre and the same thing happen again. He's a ticking time bomb (estimate of at most 18 months but could happen any minute and the risk increases as each day goes past), he is at the best he has been for ages medically (So fit enough for surgery) but that could change in a blink and it would be too late.
As for the rest of us, I've had to take unpaid time off work and had to turn down an extra shift (which I definitely can't afford - I'm below JSA levels of income as it is!), James re-arranged his day off, the cost of fuel to and from the hospital (120 miles), mum postponed an important procedure that had been booked for yesterday afternoon (under the two week cancer referral rules), anxiety, stress and upset.
And it could happen all over again on the next date!We made it! To be blunt - it doesn't matter. The system works how it works... and any amount of other knowledge doesn't change your place in the queue, or if you win a bed.
I'm sure most people have "a story" of who has changed their plans/life for this day because it was this day ....
You need to be personal mates with the surgeon ... and get him to do it free/mates rates at his private practice. That's how to "jump" the queue! Or, in short, "just pay/go private". And then he'd still need a bed at his private clinic ward in the country.... but, of course, they've probably usually got a free bed, as opposed to NHS who are fighting for a bed for each and every patient, booked or unexpected.0 -
Just a quick Google, 1-in-7 ops are cancelled.
And in 2011, Ex-NHS boss died while waiting for an op at her own Hospital. She was cancelled four times.

Dad's operation was cancelled, literally minutes before he was due to go to theatre due to no available ITU beds (which he needs post operatively).
He's now home...oh and I still really dislike the A12!
So sorry to hear that Sue. Sending thoughts and hugs and prayers for all the family.Do you know anyone who's bereaved? Oh, and wear your seatbelt. My kids are only alive because they were wearing theirs when somebody else was driving in wet weather with worn tyres.0 -
So frustrating fir you and your family Sue, you would hope that having had an op cancelled there would be some priority given - at least on medical need if not fairness.I'm a Forum Ambassador on the housing, mortgages & student money saving boards. He should have done that anyway. Next time he phones to say someone will be coming at such and such a time, if he doesn't give a range then ask for one.
