Loss leader. Soon they will charge for delivery or have a minimum order.

Maybe they hope you will tip the driver?

Deliveroo seems to have found a successful model delivering restaurant meals.

Deliveroo have (IMO) got their branding and corporate identity completely wrong for their target market.

Not saying they've not been successful, just saying that when I first heard the name I didn't consider it does anywhere near what it actually does. Also, spelling it just feels wrong.

As long as Etefy, Deliveroo etc don't end up with a brand as toxic as Uber (although in fairness neither has broken laws in most countries they've gone into, before turning their customers into a lobbying organisation (for free, of course)) they should be ok.

Re. Waitrose, it isn't always the same food, though, that you're 'paying more' for.
I like the choice that Waitrose has, for things like ready meals and other fresh stuff. The quality is usually pretty good, too.

I also like the fact that it's not crammed full with shoppers, and children all over the floor. It's not noisy, either. Too much of all that does my head in! (ADHD rears its head again!)

But the huge, huge attraction for me is the self-scanning handsets, so you scan as you go round, and pack as you buy. I loathe having to load the trolley, unload the trolley at the conveyor, pack and load again, in addition to loading into the car and unloading it at home!

In a 'normal' shop, the items get handled seven times between the supermarket shelf and the kitchen shelf. At Waitrose you cut out the worst three of those, as you take an item off the shelf and put it into your bag, then the bag goes into your car. No conveyor belt unloading and reloading and heaving.

It saves time, too, because I very rarely have to wait to de-scan and pay, so no queuing at check-outs.

I do have to do some shopping at Sainsbobs because they do a few things I like that aren't available elsewhere or else it's a different recipe and not as nice.

The other thing is convenience. I sometimes shop in M&S for food, because it is sometimes right on my route home from AmDram. So's a Waitrose, plus the latter has free parking. Sainsbobs is handy to visit if I need other shops in its vicinity, etc, again with free parking.

There's not much point me shopping at a cheaper supermarket if I don't like the way things taste.

I like the Coop for its ethics, and I really like a few of its things, but again, it doesn't stock all of my favourites. Being small, it doesn't have the range of bigger supermarkets.

Then, other stuff I get delivered from the organic people!

And lastly, I belong to a little local food 'coop' thing, where I order very local, smallfry produce online, but it's close enough for me to walk up the road to collect it.

I really spread my custom around, don't I? :rotfl:

Ps. I like the Banana Beer that Asda sell, but I don't often go there!
I won't give Tesco my money on principle, and there aren't any Morrisons or others close enough to be worth going to. The parking system at Lidl caused me a lot of stress, and I didn't much like the food I bought to try. I have shopped there a lot for non-food items, though. Don't think I've ever been to an Aldi..... there isn't one handy enough.

    .

    how do you say Deliveroo?

    Is it deliver-roo?
Is the oo significant? I'm starting to wonder if I'm missing something! :D
I saw it as a kangaroo with your purchases in its pouch!

I often pronounce strange words differently. Usernames on here can be quite a challenge, as I 'see' the break in syllables at different places from where they are probably meant to be! So I pronounce some of them strangely! :D
When I finally twig, I still pronounce them the strange way! :D

I read Etefy as ett-i-fy, but is it supposed to be eat-i-fy? Is it a 'pun' on Spotify? That's another weird name!

Putting -fy on the end of something seems to be common, I have no idea why though.

You can do that at my Tesco.

All these services are localised fads for few places. How they pronounce their names is irrelevant to most of us as we'll never use them.

That's the problem; to set something up nationally would be far too expensive. Let them grow and it'll still be city-only, so you don't need to worry Pastures

I think a big Sainsbury's near us is starting to do the self-scanning thing.

Pyxis The Lidl we used to go to is closed for refurb atm, but one has now opened at the opposite side of the town centre to us (hope that makes sense) and we tried it out recently. We had to scan our receipt or something, and then put the receipt in a machine and key in the car's registration number if I remember rightly. Was that what you found stressful? I thought it was a really awkward way to do things, and a lot of customers were having problems scanning their receipt in the first place!
In the one we'd been used to using, we just told the checkout assistant our car reg and they keyed it in, and that was that. I'm sure when it re-opens, it will have the new system. Grrr.

Years ago our local Sains had a trial where you did the self scan using the camera on your mobile - it never worked that well and was quietly dropped.

However Tesco have had it for years and Asda recently introduced it. No doubt Morrisons will get there eventually.

This is very sad - I had a home network win yesterday. Our 'main' PC is in the study but that is in the old par tof the house with no hard wired lan so it had to be homeplugged or wifi'd on to the network which was always problematical and the printer next to it also kept having wifi problems when using a wireless bridge so had been put back to being usb from the pc rather than a network printer.

Then it occurred to me that when they installed the virgin cable they insisted on putting in a wire for the tv box which we had in the study but never used for TV as our TV is either aerial or IP. So I moved the router to the tv cable point next to the PC and printer and then used the homeplugs to join up to the rest of the wired LAN and suddenly everything works seamlessly.

I still want to get a new router though as the virgin hub does not support time limits on internet access by device which the old BT box did which is ideal for the kids access.
    I think....

Do you still have the old BT box?
No reliance should be placed on the above! Absolutely none, do you hear?
