So, have just checked email. A bit of a result with regard to the book at the archives. I can read the transcript, then photograph the entire book to read at my leisure. The cost for a day's photopass is £7.50. That's reasonable if it means just one trip.

I saw one on Freegle a few days ago, but by the time I saw it, it had been on for a couple of days and would have been snapped up. It was a very large one, though. When I got one for the living room, I wanted one a bit bigger than the one in my bedroom, but when I got it home it was two sizes larger and a bit too big, really.

It beats me how people can have those really mahoosive ones in ordinary houses. Fine in a loft apartment, but a bit dominating in a room that's 12' X 12'.

I agree, a 12 inch black and white snowstorm was good enough for me when I was growing up so why does anyone want anything any bigger - and as for remotes, are you so geriatric you can't get out of your chair to turn the dial to another channel?
    I think....

    Hahaha :D

But seriously, some of those mahoosive ones are as large as a wall!

In those days, there were only 4 channels. So enough preset buttons for each channel to have its own button. Now it would mean re-tuning a dial for every channel change.

I remember when channel 5 was born and our bedroom TV was an old black and white with 4 buttons, so 2 channels had to share!

    Hahahahahahahahahahahahaha!
When I was a prawn there was only one channel. I don't remember that, though.
Then two. I remember there only being two.

The first time I watched ITV, some kids prog or other, when it ended I cried because it had been so short. :(
Then, a few minutes later, it started again! :D
(It was the commercial break! Never experienced one before! :rotfl:)

Then we got BBC 2. I remember that well. Although the TV I was using couldn't get it, or did we need a special aerial? Oh, perhaps that was when colour came out. I remember that! That was exciting, although it was some years before we could afford one.
And it was all downhill after that!

Do kids these days even realise that black and white tv was a thing? There are probably a lot who've never seen a CRT.

If ten year old me saw a flat screen TV on a wall I'd go outside and look at the wall to see where the back bit was poking through.

Or ask why is there a picture frame with no picture in it?
Or a mirror that's all black! :rotfl:

An ex-boss of mine bought one, a 60" plasma IIRC. It looked fine in the showroom, 100' each way with a 12' ceiling and the telly surrounded by lots of others, but it really did dominate the room when he got it home.

Even though she'd seen it in the showroom, his wife was not amused.

One of my stipulations when we moved to this house was a room that was TV free for me. DH likes to have the TV on a lot. I would be happy not to have one in the house.
Luckily he's never wanted a TV in the bedroom!

I can remember when your TV needed an extra button to receive the new third channel as it had more lines than the usual two channels.
