When Josh and Joe were young and their dairy intolerance in full force, we would have rice milk (they were also intolerant to soya, wheat and sensitive to gluten!). It has a slightly better flavour than soya milk, so maybe possibly give that a try?

LNE had an intolerance to dairy that caused skin rashes. He used to abstain from dairy most of the time, using rice milk for cooking etc, and then indulge in puddings with lots of cream on special occasions, and put up with the resulting temporary skin deterioration as having been worth it.
Growing up we used Stork block margarine for everything. Sandwiches, toast, shallow frying eggs and fish fingers, deep frying chips, cakes/buns. Stork was what we used - and there was also some lard in the fridge that I think was used for Yorkshire puddings and roast spuds.

In our home growing up the block marge was Echo. Haven't seen that for years. IIRC we also had lard that got used for roasting etc on occasions, but mostly frying and roasting were done with dripping, unless it had all got used up.

But, could you tell it from butter? :D

We had butter too - but only for bread, toast etc. Baking was definitely always done with marge.

Tyre performance in the wet deteriorates rapidly below about 3mm tread - change yours when they get dangerous, not just when they are nearly illegal (1.6mm).
Oh, and wear your seatbelt. My kids are only alive because they were wearing theirs when somebody else was driving in wet weather with worn tyres.

I can tell axle grease from butter - I can even tell the vile so-called "spreadable butter" from butter ;)

Joe has added a mid first to his mid 2.1 in his math module exam...not bad for someone who had to retake maths at GCSE!
We made it! All three boys have graduated, it's been hard work but it shows there is a possibility of a chance of normal (ish) life after a diagnosis (or two) of ASD. It's not been the easiest route but I am so glad I ignored everything and everyone and did my own therapies with them.
Eldests' EDS diagnosis 4.5.10, mine 13.1.11 eekk - now having fun and games as a wheelchair user.

I saw an NHS dietician after having blood test that found I had high cholesterol of the "wrong kind". I refused to take statins mainly because of the reported side effects, most of which were things I had problems with due to ME, so didn't want to take the risk of making things worse.

She was very helpful, and recommended The Portmanteau Diet which involved eating a handful of almonds every day amongst other things. I did try hard to stick to it, but hated the almonds, probably because OH bought the ones in their skins that taste incredibly bitter. Prob would have managed if he'd bought nibbed almonds. Also started eating more fish, oily fish at least once a week, plus other fish too. A year later cholesterol was much improved. OK I know n=1 isn't a scientific test, but the diet seemed to help me.

Since got the diverticulosis diagnosis in 2016 have changed my diet a lot more. Our basic standby breakfast is now home made humus on toast with a mixed salad. Sweetcorn, beetroot, celery, spring onion, cucumber, tomatoes dressed in olive oil and wine vinegar and garlic dressing. Do cheat with a fry up a couple of times a month. ;) Really should get a repeat of cholesterol test one of these days to see if it's improved even more.

The other really useful thing dietician told me was that I shouldn't take VitD tablets with tea (as I was doing :o ) as the tannins in it prevented absorption. So I force the horse pill sized things down with coffee now! All her advice was sensible and helpful, could have gone back for further help but felt prob didn't really need to. So she discharged me, but told me I could get GP to refer me back again if I wanted.
Interesting about the almonds. I like almonds in their skins, though.

I don't know the Portmanteau diet...... I'll look it up.

You can get home testing kits for cholesterol in Boots, although I can't remember if they give figures for both LDL and HDL or whether it's just a total cholesterol figure which isn't so useful.

On Friday I'll be stopping the dairy-free and seeing what happens. Although I wasn't excluding dairy for my asthma/breathing, I have noticed that it's been better, although that could be due to the end of winter, me keeping the heating on longer, the general improvement in my diet, etc. etc.
Reinstating the cheese and yogurt will determine if that is so. I do hope not!

My niece has her first proper job. I'm delighted for her and it means that she will be living with us for a few weeks while she sorts out accommodation etc,

Downside is that in the few days she has been with us for interviews I've bitten my tongue so many times: mini-dresses for interviews, travelling alone late at night, turning up when you say you will not at midnight.

I'm also not used to a girl around the house: the volume is higher, far less ability to think for herself, constant chatter, TV programmes that I can't believe exist.......all a learning curve.

Amazing result. Not least because I think there is a big jump between gcse and anything further.
