Are we in trouble with NCD?
Bought a second hand car and insured it with Tesco insurance who we have never used before with a full NCD.
But due to timewasters we haven't yet sold our old car.
We can't cancel tax and insurance due to potential buyers needing to test drive it right?
So we currently have 2 cars using the one NCD.
How long is this allowed? It is now 20 days.
Any advice here?

It's not allowed at all. When you took out the policy with tesco you actually had nil NCD, but told them otherwise!
Explain the circs straight away to Tesco. (In the hope they will see it as an "innocent mistake" and simply amend the premium)
(You give them an opportunity to cancel your policy should they discover the truth (that you had nil Ncd when taking out the policy - which could be very bad news especially if you need to claim/get a claim against you!)
(Alternatively, cancel the tesco policy now yourself and swallow the cancellation fees - then change over cars on your existing policy, and ask them to keep the old one covered there until you sell it)0 -
How did you prove your NCB to Tesco when you first took out the policy?0

I was once insured by Tesco. At the end of the year they sent me a renewal. I went on their website and they quoted cheaper than their renewal so I bought it online. They didn't send me proof of NCB. Then they got really nasty saying that I hadn't sent them proof of NCB and they were going to cancel my insurance. I remember writing this letter begging them to send me proof of NCB so I could send it back to them!0

"full NCD" is a pretty meaningless statement because every insurer had a different maximum amount you can build up, so you should always quote NCB in years.0 -
OK, 34 years NCD. Thank you to everyone for your help. Now I know what to tell my husband. So we will stick with Tesco and have to pay roughly double the quote they gave us. But will they apply the NCD when it is not used any longer for the old car? If anyone knows that would be handy. We can of course ask them when we phone.0

So just to clarify, you have you old car still insured under your old policy with the NCD as mentioned above and have taken out a new policy with Tesco quoting that same NCD.
As mentioned you've essentially made a false statement so you need to speak to Tesco about it but personally I'd be tempted just to cancel the Tesco policy altogether and insure your new car under your old policy asking them whether they'll allow you also insure the old car whilst you look to sell it.
If you still can't sell it then you'll have to look for alternative insurance arrangements for your old car.0 -
Can't you just do webuyanycar.com and have it taken away. Ok the price may not be great but could be offset against 2 lots of insurance running. Tax being in place. Hassle if they cancel your policy. Etc0

Strictly speaking they don't "have" to accept the NCD part way through the policy year, so if they agree to when you contact them then ask them to confirm this back to you in writing.OK, 34 years NCD. (If they won't do it then it will probably be cost effective to cancel and go elsewhere)0 -

That was a good idea. They actually quoted not too bad a price but my husband now has a buyer who has paid a deposit so we can get everything squared up. Thanks again everyone.:T0
