Part of the wing fell off - do I claim BA or American?

I booked roundup flights with BA to and from the USA. The flights were all operated by American.
I arrived back this morning 24 hours delayed, because part of the flap on the wing the first plane I sat on fell off soon after departing. By the time the plane had returned (accompanied by fire trucks); I had waited on the floor of a closed airport and been found a hotel and return flights I arrived back a day late.
Do I claim compensation from BA or American?

EU261 claims are against the operating airline (which is AA in your case)
as your flight was departing from outside the EU on a non-EU airline, EU261 does not apply
when you have a non-EU airline, only flights departing from the EU are covered under the regulations
Does your travel insurance pay anything for delays?0
