The trouble is, they are talking about the way that SuperLucky Di comps. She enters competitions that take a lot of effort. She (and her husband and son) might spend hours compiling a video aimed at a particular brand, or making some fantastic creation, or writing a 1000 word essay or poem. She also searches out local competitions for her area.
I am guessing that most of us on this forum enter hundreds of easy to enter competions, such as twitter retweets, click to wins, and magazines like puzzler.
Saga probably give their readers the impression that you can expect to win by entering say 10 prize draws a day and we all know (and SuperLucky Di knows) that you would have to be really lucky to win something that way.
We all probably know that if we enter effort competitions and really put the effort in, we stand more chance of winning, but how many of us actually put that effort in? I for one know that if a competition asks me for example to upload a photo of a cake that I have created with say a tennis theme, I don't bother, but I daresay something specialised like that would have very few entries.0 -
I agree with Marg2k8.
It all depends how you actually Comp. To give you an example, I first got introduced to Comping in 2010. That year, I entered 8000 Comps and won 5. So a 1 in 1600 win rate. However, those five were worth £7000.
Last year, I won nearly £10k from approx 36 wins, but my win ratio was c. 1 in 40. The difference is I spend an hour doing 1 effort-based entry, and in my view, have a better chance of winning than someone who knocks out 50 entries in the same period.0 -
I read it and just shook my head at it.
Why does the media print articles like this? All it does is build people's hopes up, and then they come on here with 'I've entered 22 comps this month, and not won a thing, it's all a con'
For the vast majority of us on here it is a hobby. I'm getting sick of people going to papers, etc bragging about how much they have won.
Grumble over

I actually love effort comps - and do bake the cakes, make the videos etc. I do search out the local ones. And my hit rate is pretty good with these sort of comps - BUT - no way could you find 10 a day of them. The amount of local and effort comps around for prizes I actually want (as a good one takes a full day or more to enter sometimes I aint putting in the effort for a crappy T shirt) is really, really low. I can generally find 2 or 3 a month.2018 - £562 2019 - £130 2020 - £276 2021 - £106 2022 - £1400
