Hi,
Do all phone automatically lock to the first sim card that is used even when you have bought the phone yourself? If so can anyone tell me why.

No. Only some Iphones purchased from some retailers i.e. CPW.0

so if it was bought directly from a retailer, it shouldn't be?
I have an old iPhone 3g which I want to pass on to someone, I cannot remember who I had a contract with and do not know anyone who has a sim which will fit the phoneTreat other's how you like to be treated.

Any network will send you a free PAYG SIM if you order online. Even without knowing which network it might be locked to, if more than one of the main networks' SIMs are not rejected, it must be unlocked.Evolution, not revolution0

If by retailer you mean a phone retailer it will either be locked (if bought from a retailer like EE, o2, Vodafone, Three, P4U) or would have locked to 1st sim (if bought from CPW).
The chances of an iPhone 3G having been bought unlocked are pretty slim, at the time it was sold I think only bought directly from Apple would be unlocked.====0
