Because you use the telephone line to get broadband.

  • I personally don't use a landline so surely i should have a huge discount for just using the internet.

But if you have a active phone line coming into your property you pay line rental on it regardless of whether you use just a phone, just broadband or both.

I thought people had stopped asking this old chestnut of a question.
  • Ok! another rip off by Phone providers to prise more cash out of Joe public in this day and age the providers could split net from phone but that would mean finding out how much they are ripping people off.

Calm down dear! You CAN have broadband only, without the phone, with Virgin Media. Problem is that it's not much cheaper, as it does cost them around the same to still have the line, billing etc set up.
I think Vodafone might also do this for Openreach phone lines (everyone except Virgin) but again it's not much cheaper.

Yes you do, you need a landline to be able to have broadband, if you don't use a phone then there are no phone charges, phone calls would be extra to your line rental just as your broadband is.

Whether you use the line to make calls or to send data over it, you still need to pay for the physical line. The repair and maintenance costs are the same wherher you make calls, send data, or both.
