The car has a service once every 6 months.
A proper service? Seems strange that they've not picked up on the plugs being due before they start to cause this kind of problem, then...

Just checked their website we have the interim service so probably our fault for not doing the full ones which check the plugs.

The mistake you are making is taking the car to Halfords at all.

Find a proper garage. Halfords are generally useless unless you want a bulb at 3pm one Sunday.

Perhaps if you filled in your location on your profile, or shared it with the rest of the forum someone local might be able to suggest a garage less... incompetent than Halfords.

There is no "filter" in the exhaust. Get a local or even a mobile mechanic to change the plugs and coil packs, then get your money back from Halfrauds. Its a 10 min job.

    There's the cat, of course.

But I suspect it's this week's wallet-emptier of choice. "It's yer DPF, innit, luv"

Never heard of a cat being called a filter, DPF is only in a diesel, a catalyst is, well, a catalyst and doesn't filter any thing.

Apologies if any misleading info provided earlier.
I've just double checked the receipt and the part they replaced was called an EGR valve. It was £268.
