Well spotted. I didn't notice it had gone up from the time between the title and first post :D

ETA: I notice the title has now been updated to match the first post, too...

Sorry for any confusion - I suddenly realised that I used two different figures for my budget and had to update the title accordingly.

With most of your driving in town, a modern diesel will likely present some costly problems at that mileage. Stick to petrol.

Thank you - petrol it is. Helps to narrow down my options a bit.

I would suggest a Zafria all the way, we have had one for 7 years bought for pretty much the same reasons you have.

we have the 1.6 petrol and it has been for the recall twice - but now sorted.

it's now 10 years old we do 5-7k per year and i can't fault it at all, and i have a passionate hate of vauxhall but in terms of value for money you can't beat it.

if time around again would go for the 1.8 - but less of them about and maybe a better spec - ours is fairly basic but does have a/c at least.

we bought ours at 3 years old and was ex-motorbility and as i say it hasn't missed a beat in the time we've owned it. it has been serviced every year and looked after.

loads of room for buggies etc, but no space if all 7 seats are up.

Thanks for that - the Zafira really does seem to make sense. The recall that you mentioned above - is that in relation to the fire issue that I mentioned above?
  • Oh for the love of God.

IT WAS NOT A SERIOUS SUGGESTION.

I was simply making light of the budget being £5000.00 and not £5000.01 or £5000.87.

    I give up.

    Oh right, good one.

The more I look at autotrader, the more I think I am being a bit shortsighted in not at least considering a roomier estate car (I have updated the title of the thread accordingly).

    What estates are worth considering?

Honda FRV? Quirky 6 seater, unbeatable reliability....
Pretty economical for it's size even in petrol versions.
Your £5,500 will mean looking at vehicles around ten years old, but I'd take a ten year old Honda over a three year old Vauxhall. Honda owners tend to be older and most vehicles even at that age will be well looked after with service history.

As far as I'm aware the Zafira with climate control isn't affected, so that's the one I'd go for.
