Oh, you know I think that's a little unfair. We've had four through the family at various times and done tens of thousands of miles in them without any significant problems, and not one breakdown.

The o/p would have a heart like a lion to buy a £5k Range Rover.

That really is a gross generalisation, fella. Only one of ours cost over 5K. It was £5700 IIRC.

Looked after properly, they're fine. I'd have another (cheap) one tomorrow without fear.

In any case, none of this is the reason I posted originally... I was pointing out the accuracy of the OP's budget being specified to the nearest penny rather than the usual 'about 1-100K to spend' we see here.
  • It's a shame your budget is only £5000.00. Could probably have got a nice Range Rover for £5000.01

    Petrol Range Rover for £5k.

    Running costs much.

Oh for the love of God.

IT WAS NOT A SERIOUS SUGGESTION.

I was simply making light of the budget being £5000.00 and not £5000.01 or £5000.87.

    I give up.

Thanks for your input, everyone - fuel economy is something I hadn't really considered.

We only do about 8,000 miles per year but I don't want to be spending masses on fuel, unnecessarily.

The car spends most of its time in town.

Is there any point even considering a diesel at the moment? The government seem to be doing all they can to get them off the road.

That being said - given that petrol and diesel was exactly the same price the other day and diesels get a much better MPG, tax on diesels can go up quite a bit beyond that of petrol and a diesel might still be more economical to run.

With most of your driving in town, a modern diesel will likely present some costly problems at that mileage. Stick to petrol.

But OP's budget is £5,500.00, so the RR is within budget. ;)

I would suggest a Zafria all the way, we have had one for 7 years bought for pretty much the same reasons you have.

we have the 1.6 petrol and it has been for the recall twice - but now sorted.

it's now 10 years old we do 5-7k per year and i can't fault it at all, and i have a passionate hate of vauxhall but in terms of value for money you can't beat it.

if time around again would go for the 1.8 - but less of them about and maybe a better spec - ours is fairly basic but does have a/c at least.

we bought ours at 3 years old and was ex-motorbility and as i say it hasn't missed a beat in the time we've owned it. it has been serviced every year and looked after.

loads of room for buggies etc, but no space if all 7 seats are up.
The futures bright the future is Ginger
