Top ruined after washing according to instructions

I bought an expensive top in the January sales which I have worn a few times since. On my last wear, I spilt something on it so I put it in the wash last week. The instructions said to wash with similar colours and at 30 degrees in the machine. So that's what I did.
When it came out, it had shrunk and developed three holes which were not there before. There was nothing in the wash which could have made holes so I'm disappointed at the poor quality of the fabric.
I know I'm outside the normal 30 days to return faulty items (right?) but is there anything I can do? I'd like to be armed before going back to the shop and asking for a refund/replacement/etc.
Thanks in advance for your help.

What type of fabric was it?
How did you dry it?
Presumably this isn't the first time you've washed it?
You've got your receipt or proof of purchase?0 -

Thanks all.
I spilt some food on the top, and this was the first time I'd washed it - because I'd only worn it a few times and I (usually) don't get things dirty very quickly (seriously - I have clothes which I haven't washed in over 6 months, because they're not dirty).
The top was dried indoors, hanging up on a rounded edged hanger. I noticed the holes and the shrinkage immediately it came out of the washing machine though so they didn't happen during drying.
I do have the receipt - always keep my receipt.
The fabric is 100% viscose.
Thanks again. Do I have any rights of return?0 -

Did you want to say something constructive?
OP has followed the instructions and not done anything that would cause the shrinkage and damage. They should contact the retailer and ask for a suitable remedy (refund/ repair/ replace).
Who is the retailer OP, and what brand is the top? Are you still within six months of purchase? Some will sort this without question, others may require the top to be tested first.
Also was the top over £100 and did you pay by credit card?0 -

Did you use a low spin speed?
A Google search indicates that viscose is liable to shrinking and needs to be washed carefully, preferably in a wash bag if done in the machine as the agitation in the machine can cause damage.
Another possibility is that your machine heated the water to a higher temperature.
One article says that the garment can be resized by ironing it.
There also instructions on how to 'unshrink' it.0
