Spilt Product

I purchased a beauty product from Boots and rather than pay for a small bag I popped it into my handbag. when I got home the product had leaked all over my bag and purse, these are both Fossil and cost at Christmas (a present) around £300. I have tried to dry and clean the product off but unfortunately the product has ruined cosmetically both items. I email Boots today and they came back and said they were not liable but as a good will gesture offered me 1000 advantage points. I am really disappointed with Boots' response and lack of customer service in this respect. I had only 1/2 the product left in the bottle and what is in there still leaks out. Can anyone please advise me on this and what my rights are before I go back to Boots with my response. I have photos which I am sending in my response.
thanks in advance

how's it boots fault?0

Because the item they sold leaked and was unfit for purchase0

Was it leaking on the shelf ?
Was it leaking at the till ?
Was it leaking when you put it into your bag ?
Or did it leak because you squashed it into a handbag ?0 -
Rather than pay 5p, you decided you'd risk carrying a product in a £300 handbag.
I expect your rights are limited to the Sales of Goods Act for this - in that the product was not 'fit for purpose' due to the leak. However, you may only be 'compensated' for the cost of the product, not necessarily the damage caused.
Could this not be covered by home insurance?0 -
SOGA has been superseded by the 2015 CRAIf you are querying your Council Tax band would you please state whether you are in England, Scotland or Wales0

How do Boots know you didn't open it for a sniff etc before putting it in your bag leaving the top loose? Can't see this going very far.0

thank you for your comments.
I picked the bottle up from the shelf it had a screw top, paid, and popped in bag. even fully screwed on the item leaked hence my query on this site. as it was a premium brand I did not expect the leakage and no one is prepared for every situation (I do my best not to buy plastic bags whether the cost 5p or not).
There was no leak on the shelf and I imagine this was due to the product bring upright.
I agree that I don't think I will get far with this however I was just querying my rights as I couldn't find anything on the web to match my circumstances.
The product not squashed into the hand bag. I am quite sure Boots could query me not placing the top on an item as suggested by Tykesi, but that could be said for many claims. I consider myself and honest person and it would be my word against theirs. I am not looking for monies but maybe an offer to try and repair or replace said items.0 -

Replacing £300 worth of damaged items is in my book a lot of "monies"
Where exactly on the bottle is it leaking fromIf you are querying your Council Tax band would you please state whether you are in England, Scotland or Wales0 -
Whenever I buy anything with a screw top I always make sure it is on tightly. Same when using salt and pepper sets.
My wife always carries a couple of 5p bags in her handbag for the OP's type of purchase. But can never find them...0 -
Hindsight is a wonderful thing, I have certainly learn my lesson however I am gutted about my bag.0
