Understanding money is an important life skill and you can help your children learn about money from a young age.
To help get you started, we'll post a link with some ideas for 'maths & money' activities on this thread each month for the rest of the year.
We'd love to hear how you get on with them!
Always remember our top tips for helping kids learn about maths and money:
- Be positive about maths. Don't say things like "I can't do maths" or "I hated maths at school"; your child might start to think like that themselves.
- Point out the maths in everyday life. Include your child in activities involving maths and money.
- Praise your child for effort rather than talent - this shows them that by working hard they can always improve.
- If you struggle with maths yourself, use our free online tool the National Numeracy Challenge to improve your maths level.

I hated maths all the way through school, could just about manage adding up, taking away, dividing and multiplying. I learnt money management from my mum, for which I am eternally grateful. We grew up with very little money, we were taught to save up for things, and were told no we can't afford it on many occasions. I haven't had any children so no one to pass the lessons onto.
This help from National Numeracy is just what's needed.

This month, help Sophie save for a tennis racquet and get your junior school-aged children thinking about saving money. What might they like to buy if they save up?
This activity is linked to the Year 5 curriculum (age 9-10) and helps children learn about decimal places and percentages as well as saving up.

We've got a 2 for 1 offer for you this month - with two free activity worksheets for half term!
In our Year 6 'Supermarket offers' activity worksheet, get your kids looking at the numbers behind the deals. Work out which is the cheapest way to buy a product, and ask them to look out for offers when you're doing the weekly shop. Are those special offers really such a good deal?
And as a Halloween bonus, our Year 2 'The witch's spell' activity sheet helps younger children with addition and multiplication in solving problems. How many creatures' legs need to go into the witch's potion?
Visit our Family Maths Money Activities Page to download the worksheets. And if you can find a creative way to combine the two activities, we'd love to hear about it!Official Organisation Representative

It's almost the Christmas holidays! So we have a Christmas activity for you and your kids to share, based on planning a party within a set budget.
This activity comes from our set of Family Maths Toolkit resources and is aligned to the National Curriculum for Year 4.
What food and drink would your kids like at their party - and what can they afford within the budget? Will they opt for a bouncy castle and give out prizes for games?
