Holiday cancellation

Me and my partner were due to go on holiday to turkey on the 24.06.17, two weeks before it, on the 9.06.17, my mam died suddenly, so obviously there's no way I want to go away, I live with my mam I'm still only 25. Stupidly, we didn't have insurance, I was leaving it till last minute, but it didn't even enter my head, that I would be getting the insurance incase we had to cancel the holiday, all I was thinking about was incase we needed holiday treatment abroad. We booked it at hays travel, but the airline is thomas cook, who apparently are the least compassionate airline and have basically said we have a 100% loss, can't get our money back, can't change to another date and can't change both name on the tickets, can only change one name. I know it was stupid to not have insurance but surely something can be done, it's not asif a distant family member has died, she was my next of kin. I wasn't bothered about the holiday at first, but now I have time to think about everything, it's worrying me that we're losing £1000

I'm afraid, without insurance, you're reliant on goodwill.0

I don't expect Thomas Cook are any more or less compassionate than any other airline. There will have been a strong recommendation at booking that you took out insurance, unfortunately you did not do so. In future, always take out insurance at the time of booking.
What would your mam want you do to? A relaxing holiday may be helpful as you work through the grieving process.0 -
Would the holiday period clash with the funeral or any other event that requires you to be there? If not, you might seriously consider taking the holiday: while it would not be the experience that you had planned, you might find it to be very helpful.0
