Credit Card or Pre-paid card

Help!
I'd always thought that for non-cash spending abroad, a credit card was the best option (seemed to be the gist of everything I'd read). Up to this year, we've never actually had any credit cards so have always used pre-paid ones but this year I'd intended to pay for our hotel in Italy (we pay when we check out) using my Capital One MasterCard. Reading some of guides now, I'm not actually sure if it is the cheapest method after all!
From what I can gather, Cap One charge a 2.75 spending fee (wouldn't be using it for cash withdrawals) but if I top up a pre-paid card such as FairFX/WeSwap that don't have charges, wouldn't I avoid that therefore making it cheaper? Is it that simple? Just can't understand why most things I've read seem to suggest credit cards are best option if that's the case...
