Short Term - Breakdown assistance cover - Canada

Planning a trip to Alberta, Canada.

Last time hiring a car from Calgary Airport with damage waiver etc and roadside assistance etc.

Have read as with European car rental its cheaper to get your own short term breakdown cover incl tyres and windscreen etc rather than pay through the nose for the rental rates.

Having looked in Alberta (Google) for the same but Canadian Tire, Costco and BCAA all dont list short term cover only 12mths.

Anyone know of who operates short term cover in Alberta either from here or there.

As a note: went through the bother of getting an International Driving Permit and DVLA codes etc. Not wanted despite telling em I had them.!!!!! May 2017

thanks

    You buy it from the UK before you take the car.

    What I reommended is what you need when renting a car

    Why would you need breakdown cover? If the car breaks down that is the responsibility of the rental company. Their car needs to be fit for purpose.

    What you get when buying ROADSIDE PROTECTION
    Waiver of responsibility for the cost to provide 24/7 roadside assistance (where available) which includes replacement of lost keys (including remote entry devices), flat tire service (if no inflated spare is available, the vehicle will be towed. Cost of a replacement tire is not covered by RAP), lockout service (if the keys are locked inside the vehicle), jumpstarts, and fuel delivery service for up to 3 gallons (or equivalent liters) of fuel if Vehicle is out of fuel.

    So if you lose the keys, have a flat tyre or run out of fuel.

    Excess protection from my linked to insurance above:
    You are covered for up to £6,000 in total, and for any one claim (excluding CDW and SLI) for any excess or repair costs you have to pay under the terms of your car hire rental agreement if your rental vehicle is involved in an incident whilst being used for business or pleasure and it results in:
    • Damage to the rental vehicle including damage to the windows, tyres and wheels, headlights, the undercarriage and the roof;
    • Loss of use of the rental vehicle including theft;
    Towing costs relating to damage or mechanical breakdown.

    Our Car Hire excess policies have the following additional benefits:
    1. Car Rental Key Cover - up to a maximum of £500, for each and every claim.
    2. Mis-fuelling Cover - up to a maximum of £500 for each and every claim.
    3. Reparation – of £25 per day with a maximum of £300 during the period of insurance.
    4. Drop Off Charges – up to £300.
    5. Lock-Out – up to a maximum of £60 if you are unintentionally locked out for physical assault.
    6. Road Rage – up to £1000 for physical assault.
    7. Car Jacking – up to £1000 for physical assault.

    This is a typical selection for Avis whom I approached last.

    I've already advised you of your options
    Lockout Service - Gain entry when keys are locked inside the vehicle. Get replacement keys or locksmith assistance.
    Flat Tire Assistance & Replacement - We'll replace a flat or damaged tire with the spare, or get the car towed to the nearest service facility.
    Jump Start - If your vehicle experiences battery failure, we'll provide a jump start.
    Fuel Delivery - if you run our of gas/fuel, we’ll deliver 3 gallons (in US/CA) or up to $10 fuel delivery (in AU/NZ) to your location.

    If you think that your battery will go flat or you will run out of petrol, pay AVIS.
    If you have perused the insurance T&C and are happy with the cover provided, get the insurance.

    What is perhaps unclear to you is that you still have Roadside Assistance even without purchasing the add on or even the insurance to which I have link.

    The Add On covers things that could be construed as your fault.

    Battery, as you could have left the lights and radio on with the engine off and could have run the battery down and now the car won't start.
    Running out of petrol.....again, self induced.

    The insurance covers everything else, including locking yourself out of the car.
