Recommendations on the best fibre optic broadband service in the UK please

Hi all.

I have been with virgin media for my broadband and TV package for as long as I can remember...
But I am paying £70 a month and the Internet isn't even stable most of the time anymore.
So I am looking to change providers.
I have 3 kids, all of which use the Internet on various devices, phones, and xbox one and Netflix, so really needs to be fibre optic.

Looking for you lovelies to guide me in the right direction of who to go with to ensure a decent Internet connection and hopefully not cost the earth.

Best would be the VM optic.
Your problems what have VM said ??

Are these problems over WiFi connections ??


Other services are via BT fibre optic to the cabinet .

Unless you have a specialist provider in your area and most don't then all FTTC uses the same basic infrastructure maintained by Openreach.

Many ISPs provide their service using that infrastructure and I've seen few complaints about lack of capacity and subsequent congestion for some years now so the differences are going to customer service, free equipment provided, and price. The prices cary depending on what offer/cashback is available at the time. There are complaints about CS and the supplied router for all ISPs.

One thing you need to be sure of is that you are beyond your minimum term or you'll end up paying VM for nothing. Their business model is to try to make sure everybody keeps getting new minimum terms by offering loyalty discounts and package tweeks,

Next up comes TV as I'd guess you are using VM's and that will obviously stop when you cancel. Do you have an aerial or satellite dish you can use, Do you like to record programs - if so you'll need a settop box that does that. Do you want programs that aren't available on Freesat/Freeview?

Is FTTC available in your area? It almost certainly will be but there is a chance that your local cabinet is fully subscribed.

Openreach have a nasty habit of no-shows and springing nasty surpises such as no cabinet capacity so if you want to be 100% certain of continued service don't cancel VM until the new service is up and running. Then they'll offer a monster disount and you'll wonder why you left.

Swapping from cable to phone based internet and vice versa can be no problem at all but sometimes problems crop up and make it very stressful.
