Car Hire Excess Insurance

Apologies if this has been asked before but i haven't been able to find it.
Do you need to declare claims on car excess insurance to your car insurance at home. I checked my car insurance companies website and it asks if you have been in an accident.
I am not sure if claims for small scratched/dents would be included as an accident and if there is an difference between a claim through excess insurance and paying for the Car Hire companies "super cover". any advice much appreciated.
