iPhone 6 not charging :(

In November 2015, I took out a contract via mobilephonesdirect.co.uk.
£250 upfront for the iPhone 6s and £10/month x24 months with TalkMobile.
Now 19 months into a 24 month contract, the phone hardly charges.
I thought something to do with Non-genuine charger, as I had misplaced the genuine charger and had been charging phone using a 'poundshop' iphone compatible charger (which worked fine for months). Now the phone is not charging at all with the non-genuine chargers and very temperamental on/off charging with the original genuine charger. Maybe some fault with the charging port (?) phone has not been dropped etc.
Mobilephonesdirect say they are limited to a 30 day guarrantee and I should contact Apple. Talk mobile say contact Apple. Apple wants to charge for repair, but surely a 24 month contract should come with some sort of obligation from the retailer or manufacturer about being able to actually use the airtime ie. having a working phone? Even if they exchange for a refurbished one e.g.

Does anyone know the legal situation here?

Thanks.

It could well be that there is fluff in the charging port which is preventing the charger from making sufficient contact to charge. The fluff could have been from the phone being in your pockets, this happened to my iPhone 7. You need to get something slip enough, for example a cocktail stick & have a gentle clean to see if anything comes out.

  • Try a decent lead and a proper charger. Those pound shop chargers are very dangerous (bursting into flames, exploding and having live mains on the output socket) and many thousands have been impounded by trading standards. Do yourself a big safety favour and smash it with a hammer and bin it.

The Apple USB to Lightning cables are fragile and a common source of trouble. Your charging issue might be as simple as a faulty cable.

24 month phone + SIM contracts do not usually include a phone warranty for the duration of the contract. Check the small print in your contract. It's a common issue frequently raised on this forum...
  • Fluff in the charging port

Use the little pin used to open the SIM card holder and gently pick it out.

I can see them opening up the sim card holder now and trying to pick out the fluff :D

Surely no one is that daft?

    Or are they?

DH had the same problem, booked an appointment, drove to the nearest city that had an apple shop, whilst waiting his turn got chatting to one of the guys doing demos of the new phones and he sorted it there and then Didn't half feel daft :D
