So presumably I didn't meet another criteria - because in their 'thanks but no thanks' letter they advised I check out my credit score...

It's actually the report that you check out. Information on there (financial associations and your conduct on your credit accounts - Current accounts, credit cards, loans, mortgages as well as how much credit you have already)

I believe they will have said that you failed on "credit scoring". This is not the same as the credit score the CRAs work out.

Financial institutions credit score you based on a number of factors.

1. The information you provide in your application

2. The information they have about your conduct with them historically

3. The information contained in your credit file from their chosen CRA or CRAs.

All this information is processed by a computer using an algorithm.
