I am not sure if tomatoes will ripen indoors once they are off the vine. However you can make a really yummy green tomato relish which my mum used to make at the end of summer. I am sure the old fashioned money saving part of the site can help for a receipe.
  • Tomatoes do ripen off the vine. It's strawberries that don't ripen once they've been picked.

Tomatoes will ripen of the plant... but best to be still attached to a vine.

Two ways that I have heard of ....

    1. Place on a bright/sunny window sill... and they will ripen...eventually.

    2. Place in a paper bag with a banana. Its one of those sciencey reasons... the gas given from the banana aids the tomatoes to ripen.

I prefer the second way myself.... as it seems to work quicker.

Green Tomato cake is lovely (yes it does sound odd - I made it for a bet and now it is an autumn regualar.
It can also be added to stews and stuff in pretty much the same way as red tomatos they are just a bit tangy.

Otherwise ripen on a window sill

This will actually get more help on the greenfingers board, so I'll move it over for you :)
  • If you haven't already taken them off the plant you could put a banana in the bed/pots with them. If not I've always found the paper bag way works best for ripening them indoors.

Or, green tomato chutney is yummy. Here's a recipe for it from the bbc website:

    Makes approx. 4 jars

Preparation time less than 30 mins

Cooking time 30 mins to 1 hour

    Ingredients

    5g/½oz root ginger
    8-10 chillies
    2kg/4lb green tomatoes, chopped
500g/1lb apples, peeled, cored and chopped
    250g/8oz raisins, chopped
    625g/1¼lb shallots, chopped
    2 tsp salt
    500g/1lb brown sugar
    570ml/1 pint malt vinegar

    Method

    1. Bruise the ginger and tie in a muslin bag with the chillies.
    2. Place all the other ingredients in a preserving pan and suspend the muslin bag among them.
    3. Bring to the boil, stirring until the sugar has dissolved, and simmer until the desired consistency is reached.
    4. Remove the muslin bag. Pour into warmed sterilised jars, cover and label.

    Hope this helps

    Now that's intriguing.
Can you remember what you did or what your basic/tweaked recipe was?
I'd love to try - shall google as well and see what I can find.
Have masses of huge green toms(one or two are starting to colour), rarities, old Trad. French curiosities planted v. late June on my return.
Shall keep seed from some if I can.
