I need a new vacuum - what do you recommend / have?

I need a new one. What do you have and is it any good? We had a Hoover Vortex which lasted for what seemed like a million years and have recently tried a Bissell 'something or other' which was pants and didn't do much. What can you recommend?

MrS is adamant that we want an upright as thats what we've always had. I don't care what it is as long as I tend not to use it much but he'll need a lot of convincing if we're going to get a cylinder.

So heres what it will be up against:

One very hairy, always moulting, dog
One long haired cat
Wool rugs which shed
Carpets through 75% of house
Tiles through 25%

I have a bad back and struggle with anything heavy so it needs to be reasonably light.

Budget = not fussed as long as it will last.

Thankyou!

If MrS is adamant it can't be a miele and has to be an upright, are you allowed to be adamant he is the only one to use it?

I was going to say miele :o , but I hate upright vacum cleaners , so it down to personal preference. I know alot of people who like dysons especilly the uprights.

Sebo, without a doubt. If you do a forum search for that name, you should come across at least one thread about choosing a cleaner and the recommendations that people made.

I wouldnt recommend a Dyson. I spend most of my time actually cutting dogs hairs out of the brushes as they are wound round it so tight you cant even get your fingers in. When I first got it it was brilliant and I loved it but 4 years on it seems to have lost power and effectiveness.

Well, MrS is often adamant about things but I can usually persuade him if necessary!

we have the red henry at the moment. after trying hoovers/vax/dysons etc..
the henry is the best weve ever had without any doubt.

    why insist on an upright?
    Get some gorm.
  • I second the Sebo Premium K, I bought it last month and it's so smooth and light, I love it! I had 2 Dysons before and they both died after 2.5 years.

    Absolutely agree!!
I am on my second Henry - I inherited the first from my dad, he was about 10 years old when my OH told me he'd had stopped working - it was the day we moved house, I was stressed, so OH went out and bought another Henry - the next day I pointed out that all he had to do was change the bag!!
'Old ' Henry has lived in the garage for the last 9 years, used occasionally to clean the car. Now we've had a clear out and he's been freecycled.
'New' Henry is 9 1/2 years old and still going strong. we have 2 hairy golden retrievers, 2 messy kids, and he's busy several times a day.

I know it isn't what MrS wants to hear, but the best vacuum cleaner I've ever had is my present one, a miele cylinder cat and dog. It has wonderful suction, comes with ordinary and turbo attachments and would suck up the floorboards if they weren't firmly anchored!:rotfl: It picks up all the *bits* from my sewing, cotton wool, fluff etc without blinking an eye, so it'd certainly cope with pet hair.
