Also check she hasn't left a tab with YouTube running on it, YouTube tends to automatically load the next suggested item and can eat data like it's going out of fashion.0

Also advise her to turn off the machine after use.You know what uranium is, right? It's this thing called nuclear weapons. And other things. Like lots of things are done with uranium. Including some bad things.

Check the router for connected devices. There will normally be a list tucked away. When you're there, I'd imagine there will be 3 wireless devices connected (iPad, laptop and one of your devices).
Also make sure that the wireless encryption is set to WPA2. Of course, use a long, beefy security key - I stick to around 32 characters and use the online password generator LastPass. While you struggle away at enterring the new password, rememeber that you have to enter this stronger password once.0 -
Thank you again, I will get her to turn off her laptop after use and all tabs after use. Her contract ends in December, we will be looking at a unlimited contract next.0

Scaremongering ?!
I am offering suggestions to help the OP .. Updates and malware are my suggestions ..
Do you have anything useful to offer apart from telling us that this doesnt affect you ?0 -
I agree with that - be polite but firm - nothing to lose. But have a look yourself first. If you're not sure what's happened say to BT "we think somebody else has been using our wifi". Change the wifi password as a minimum.I would call BT and say that she has been a victim of hacking and you would like them "as a gesture of goodwill" to credit her account or else she will definitely be leaving as soon as the contract permits.0 -

That was my thought, either that or a page with an ad or similar on it streaming video in the background.0 -
For what its worth - Banning a mac from the router is absolutely and totally pointless ..
Anyone with the skill to crack wpa will be able to sniff and then spoof your own mac in a millisecond0 -
Just a thought, has she recently got a new TV which is connected to the internet? Catch up uses a lot!0

Google "excessive BT broadband usage". There have been many examples of people being erroneously overcharged by BT, the main culprit appears to have been that their personal router is being used for BT Wifi with Fon (whatever Fon is) i.e. other folk in the area using the private router as a public Hot Spot.
I was caught with this myself a couple of years ago, one month my usage was going up by about 3GB a day instead of my usual 200-300MB, when I was only online for a couple of hours in the evening, and only chatting on web forums, no YouTube or anything of that nature.
I had it out with BT and they eventually accepted that their equipment was faulty, and it has never happened since.
I haven't bogged off yet, and I ain't no babe
