Hi, my mother-in-las has just been charged £63.00 for going over her broadband limit with BT, they say she used 76GB last month. She is a light user (only uses it for banking, insurance, Facebook etc)
When I was there the other day I noticed she had about 15 tabs open on her laptop and they must have been open for over a month, could this have been the cause? I can't believe she has used so much, she doesn't even know how to stream TV or download movies or apps.
Thanks in advance

BOTNET springs to mind ..
Do a malware scan on her machine, as it is likely riddled ..

On a seperate note , metered connections are very old hat these days ..
Is she out of contract as it would be best to "upgrade" to an unlimited connection.
You dont say what OS she is using, but these automatic updates are very large these days0 -
Thanks, I'm not sure what botnet is but I will run malware bytes when I am next there.
Unfortunately she is in contract otherwise we would change, she really doesn't need infinity, in fact we will be downgrading her package to ordinary unlimited when the contract is up.
She has a windows 10 laptop and iPad Air0 -
Another thing to check would be whether her router includes wi-fi access and, if so, whether it has adequate security set up. If not, it may be that a neighbour has been freeloading off her connection.0

+1 vote for freeloading neighbour.
If the router supports wps (push button wifi authentication) then disable it.0 -
updates !!!
Not 76GB in a month, no way. I got the "creators update" on two machines and all my other internet use and was under 50GB last month.

On the subject of malware........
Does she have any Apple iPhone, iTunes, iCloud, etc etc installed?
The amount of bandwidth that junk uses, not to mention hogging processor and RAM, it's just crazy.“I may not agree with you, but I will defend to the death your right to make an a** of yourself.”

If none of the other suggestions shed any light, download a usage app on the computer & tablet which should tell you what applications are the biggest hogs.
Does she play any games? Does she have autoplay turned off for facebook videos etc?You keep using that word. I do not think it means what you think it means - Inigo Montoya, The Princess Bride0 -
Thanks for all your helpful responses, I'll go and check them out at the weekend.0
