If a vehicle has no insurance it has to be off road and SORNd. That's the issue.

The problem with that is that it will be an offence to be uninsured until the SORN takes affect, which will be the following month.

I think you are over thinking it, insurance runs out, take car off the road. Make SORN notifaction to the DVLA - even if they enact it from the 1st of July you have made the notifaction. Requirements are met IMHO.

If you are still overly worried make the declaration by post and you can write the date of SORN on the form.

If you've just received the V11, and use the reference on that, it'll be effective from the start of July, when the current VED expires.

If you do it online with the V5C doc ref, it'll be effective immediately, cancelling immediately, and refunding any complete months from July onwards.

I have used the website to SORN a car last year in the middle of the month and it took effect immediately (I checked the tax status online).

The car is showing up as SORN today even though they used the V11 number on the phone.
