Just tried to SORN my BIL's car. The on line form gives you the options of SORN from end of month using V11 reference or immediately using V5 reference. No matter which option is used it states SORN will be from 1 July. Seriously confused.

i guess because the tax is paid for this month it just cancels at the end of the month
to be honest i didnt realise this either because if you sorn via the post and use form v890 you put the exact date down you want it to run from

There's a 24hr helpline number on there. Have you tried it?

That is not a help line, it is an automated SORN line.

Could you SORN it using it? I've never used it. I think you've stumbled across a significant flaw in the system.

If insurance runs out today then strictly speaking you have to SORN it today. If you can't that's a major flaw.

The instructions on line are clear on what to do but whichever route chosen the confirmation comes up as 1st of month and asks to confirm correct. Maybe something to do with a V11 being issued for tax at end of month. They did it on the phone in the end but that just states your SORN has been confirmed without giving any indication of when it starts from. The problem is that DVLA are too quick to jump on the genuine errors. Just have to wait and see what happens as the car is now uninsured.

Does the immediate option not work?

    Immediately

Use the 11-digit number on your vehicle log book (V5C) to take the vehicle off the road immediately.
On the first day of next month

Use the 16-digit number on your vehicle tax reminder letter (V11) to take the vehicle off the road from the first day of next month. You can only use this number once.

There is some ambiguity as to the wording that the DVLA are using. I will attempt to explain. When they say "immediately" they mean part way through the amount of tax bought.

EG You have 3.5 months tax left - you use the V5 number to SORN the vehicle "Immediately" (1st of the next month) you will get full months refunded - in this case 3.

If you are using the V11 reminder then your tax is due to run out on the first day of the next month anyway - if you were part way through the tax period you would not have the V11 reminder yet.

Essentially though I can't understand what difference it makes? If insurance has ran out just park it off the road - as you would if it were SORN
